I bought a soothing cool gel from Boots for my youngest two kids, who have both had pox over last month. That was quite good, also bicarb soda in the bath works quite well too. :)

Not necessarily what you're looking for but I find Lush Dream Cream is really calming on my skin when it's sore/itchy/sun burnt/razor burn etc. It's all natural, feels cool and calming when put on and stops the itching for a good while when I've got allergies. If it doesn;t work you can always use it yourself as a brilliant moisturiser.
I hope he gets better soon.

also put mittens or socks on his hands at night so he can't scratch in his sleep

I get really itchy feet and I use Eurax, it comes in cream or lotion. I prefer the lotion personally, but after its been on for about 5 minutes I no longer want to scratch my feet until they bleed!

Might be of some use.

I found changing what you used every couple of days helped, poor thing, it's awful. I used aloe vera and good old calomine retrospectively

witch hazel stops itching as well - you can get it in liquid or gel stick - sticks are really good - 100% natural as well

poor little love - hope hes better soon

Piriton Syrup - an anti histamine that can be given to children from 1 year old (one of mine got it for hayfever) and it states on the label 'relieves the itchy rash of chickenpox' - you could ask your pharmacist / doctor about how effective it is tomorrow at relieving the itch possibly ?

a wired tip from me. But when i put on that calamine lotion - the itching got worse, but i found that using a hair dryer on a cool setting over the itchy areas stppes the feeling for a little while anyway (as it was most itchy when the lotion was applied)
