I'm adding this to big-up the Telephone Preference Service!

Some of you may already know about it, but I'm betting there are still quite alot of people who have never heard of it.

Basically it is a service which adds your number to a list of numbers that are not to be rung by salesmen. As far as I can tell it was set-up with things like Doctor's surgeries in mind - where receiving sales calls could create problems for people by clogging up the line.

Registering is free - the website says it may take up to 28 days for your number to be added to the list.

After that tell any salesmen who ring you that you are TPS registered, they usually apologise and say they will take your number off their database.

Gotta love them!

Does work but takes while to really take hold.

Thats because TPS are UK based and cant control companies calling from other countries with different laws.

BT sales people will call if you have BT product, otherwise they shouldnt because you're on the TPS.

Same thing with PP companies calling, advise your on TPS and they'll stop.

Surverys/Charities arent selling a product, therefore not technically sales calls.

Good for you

Not so good for me and the others who are still plagued with them

There is no legisaltion for overseas/ charities and PPI calls. Or anyone phoning that is not trying to sell something to you.

TPS is powerless to resolve the above.

Hence why they dont say they'll get them all stopped. Just sales calls. Although just noticed on their website it does say this:

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so.

Organisations with which you have an ongoing relationship, for example those who regard you as a customer, (or in the case of charities - a donor) may well gather your consent during the early stages of your relationship with them and will therefore be entitled to call you even if your number is registered on TPS, unless you have previously told them specifically that you object to them calling you for marketing purposes.

As I said Powerless to stop them

Oh hang on I'm just making it up that I get bothered all the time with the phone ringing and when I answer someone I don't know has phoned me. :lol

Roughly 7 people should know my landline number ExD

Calm down, it's free and it may help to cut out certain cold calls. How can that be a bad thing. You have nothing to lose by sigining up and the possibility of a lot to gain for some.

I joined a long time ago and i don't get any cold calls,i couldn't even tell you the last time i had a cold call, was years ago.

I wonder if people who say it doesn't work that their numbers are being used from filling in online forms etc, just a thought because i never put my real landline number down,i type it incorrectly or use a moby number.

Totally agree ....I've been registered for years and still get quite a lot of calls....highly frustrating. I tried to re register to find I couldn't because I am already registered. Reporting people is hard to as you need a list of questions to hand in order to get their details to report them lol.
I hope any one joining has more luck then I do!

Jerry Seinfeld does a good one. "Oh that's great, uh huh uh huh, sorry i'm quite busy right now i've got someone over, why don't you give me your home number and I'll call you back later. What's that? you don't like being called at home? You feel it's an invasion of your privacy? Now you know how i feel".

Unfortunately these companies know that means nothing as well. I was under the impression A £10,000 fine would put them off but . They obviously have a good legal team who have told them they are operating within then law and therefore can ignore this when you tell them.

When it's International law that also means they can do what they want.

Not trying to sell something means the above also applies. Surveys market research etc.

Tps registration should / Will stop double glazing, kitchen sales etc

13. Will registering on the TPS stop unsolicited sales and marketing calls from overseas?

Companies based abroad who call into the UK and who are making calls on behalf of a UK based company, must comply with UK regulations and screen their call lists against TPS before making an unsolicited sales and marketing call to a UK telephone number. We do make the file available to overseas based companies under licence for the purpose of suppression so they know whom not to telephone but many overseas companies who telephone the UK on their own account from overseas do so to avoid legal and self regulatory restrictions. We would advise caution in responding to unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls from overseas especially if they are asking you to send them money or using a premium rate phone line (numbers beginning with 09). If you are receiving unsolicited sales and marketing calls from overseas you should contact the overseas company who is making the call.

17. Will registering on the TPS stop market research calls?

No, market research calls are not covered in the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 therefore companies conducting these types of calls are still allowed to call a TPS registered number. If you do not want to receive such calls, inform the caller to remove your details from their call lists.
