stopped thieves good or bad idea

Around 1-½ hours ago I heard some noises outside. I looked through the window and saw 5-6 teenagers trying to steal my neighbors moped. I instantly got dress and ran downstairs to alert him, we then both left in chase not seeing them jumped into his car and searched the nearby "estate". Eventually we saw the moped coming at us on the road so the driver-accelerated, joyrides bottled it and ditched it running off. I gave chase they split and left their helmets. Recovered the damaged moped and then police arrived up the road. Stopped 3 teenagers acting dodgy. The usual hood problems but I 99% reconigised one of them. Police asked me 10 times and other officers asked me again and again and I kept saying they all look like the ones and logic says 5-6 taking moped 2 riding and police catch 3 walking away from the place moped was stolen 2am. Told police I was 99% sure I reconigised one of them which I told all officers and gave description of the guy which matched but he walked free. Police let 2 free (joke) and one probably going back to prison for small cannabis found on him. 2 helmets off to evidence and car taken to pound. The rider put his hand on bonnet when he dropped the moped. Maybe convictions I doubt it.

Now my whole point to the story, I was the only neighbour to help. You do what comes naturally. But now I wonder have I just screwed myself for helping. The youths that walked free now know my face and where I live, their mate probably going back inside so they will be angry and I possibly will be going to court to give evidence. Is this why people dont help any more when the corrupt youth of today are up to no good?

seeing as you gave chase, they know you're determined, i dont think you'll be bothered.

Then again, who knows..

my old flat was burlged bout 3 months ago, i was home alone, i saw the buglar and ran to the window screaming for help.....no one came to help so i called 999. most people dont bother expect they are your close friends and stuff...thats what i think

good on ya mate its a shame more people dont help others in need ... i realise your probably worried that you may become a target but think about this .. if all the neighbours in your imediate area got together to make a stand against these little shytes they wouldnt have such an easy time of it would they ? personally i think your a hero!

me ... i would go round all the neighbours in the morning and make em all aware of what happened and ask them to watch out for the offenders ect ... keep diaries ... take photos of any wrong doings and most importantly BE THERE FOR EACH OTHER!
yeah some prob wont wanna know but knocking on there doors and facing them may make them want to join the battle against crime in your area .... small steps my friend small steps

Dont be intimidated they all have families and homes that can be gotten 2, just dont ever escalate anything unless you know you are willing to deal with the consequences.

I would help someone or call the Police if i see someone getting robbed , have done in the past and would do again.

People who rob are the worst scum going they make me sick , one of my family members had there home robbed and he wasnt insured at the time.....if i get my hands on scum like it i will give them what for ...i dont mind attacking someone if they come in my home in the middle of the night .

watched crimwatch last night and some poor 83 year old lady robbed for £16 and she died for it , people like this need to be locked away for life , scum of the earth

You did the right thing , to many people turn a blind eye but then complain that crime is high , look out for one another and dont be scared to call the police!!!

People just dont want get invovled even when they witness a crime , most will not even call them out when they see a crime in progress :/

Remember people what commit these sort of crimes are just low of the low , scum , not worth wiping dog sh--e on , so dont worry about reporting them...they are hardly big time people who will come looking for you.

Saying all this the law is a joke at the moment , people get let off left right and centre , someone breaks in youre home they should get 5 years or more in prison that would soon stop em

but even pervs get let off in a year , why is this country turning into a joke

I think a lot depends on where you live, round our way neighbours watch out for each other, when I lived at Sheff it was everyman for himself the reason I only stayed there for 9 months, good on you for getting stuck in, shame there arent more like you, the knife culture is making people want to not get involved, the reason I keep a baseball bat handy it has a longer reach than a screwdriver or knife should they turn (I would only use it to disarm though as Ive seen the damage one can do), waking up because someone has hit you on the head with a hammer has made me cautious to risks!
#7
sure the law has changed now though , if someone comes into youre home and you are in fear for your life and you kill them by mistake out of fear without thinking about it then dont you get let off lol :whistling:
Im sure if somone of you saw a robber or perv in ya kids bedroom im sure you wouldnt help yourself but to attack them , but what if that attack leads to there death?

I dont promote violence infact i condone it , but sometimes its needed in certain situations

Read some place that someone guy threw one out of a window and he got let off , good on him.

I dont think killing someone is an answer but if someone pulls a knife on you in youre own home and they dont stop what other option do you have but to use excessive force ...i think people who use weapons are just cowards , how about using youre fists instead and be a real man

Why do people rob now anyway , everyone who does not work gets benefits so whats the excuse , makes me sick , god knows what it would be like if the benefit system collapsed , we would all be getting robbed left right and center lol

Have some rep OP, don't worry about it the police have all their names so any trouble they can question where they were at so and so time.

A-n-d-y

You can use reasonable/proportionate force NOT excessive force :p so if they pull a knife you can pull a gun.

you where lucky my husband went out to the teenagers damaging our neighbours house and as he turned away thinking that they had left he was hit with something so hard he was unconscious for 3 days and his top jaw broken now the police say they cant do anything as he didnt see who hit him
#10
and if they do come back and enter our home we have been assured that as long as we can prove reasonable force we can do what we like to them .

Updated my writing above , excuse me rubbish spelling ive had like 4 hours sleep :/ im rubbish unless ive had at least 8 lol.

Like i said above i cant see why people rob , but you always get some low life drugie who is dying for a hit.

Always keep a baseball bat next to youre door or something , better still get a big dog and set it on em lol

Bit silly to be honest , whats a bit off damage to someones life , whats money property , its useless when youre dead , unless your neighbour was begging for help or life in danger then just call the Police they come out pretty quickly for things like this.

Obviously if i sw someone getting rapped i would step in straight away , but if i had a knife pointed at me for money etc i would just hand it over as its just not worth it

If you see someone damaging property though just call Police its not worth going out to a gang , no matter how strong you are as these cowards usually carry some form of a weapon , most of them are just cowards

some people dont rob for the sake of wanting something, some actually just do it for the thrill. that's what's so insane about it. i got my mobile nicked by 12-14 year old kids getting off the bus a long time ago (i was in uni). we caught one of them by the sleeve but his jacket was too slippery so he managed to get off and we chased them up the road, there were two estates that's when we figured not worth chasing as it is in their patch and i had just gotten the phone on insurance. it was a rubbish phone anyway (student deal) and the pub round the corner gave me enough change to call the orange hotline to deactivate it. those little creeps, i say get some after-school activities back, so they have stuff to do rather than be let loose on the streets! too much money going into trying to reform what damage has been done from bad choices. starts from the home and from young.

old man next door was disabled and they were igniting fireworks and firing them at his house and they were hitting our house as well but i think they like tormenting him as he is new to the area police said they would arrive as soon as they could

I hope you are ok, i wish more people were like you.

At 2am this morning i was woken up by our new neighbour's driving some kind of clapped out piece of junk.

The amount of carp car's we have seen come and go in the last few week's is unbelieveable!

They have no respect for anybody and my partner had to go to work this morning at 7.30am.

I am so annoyed :x

but as usual police always arrive too late.and if we dont stand up to these yobs they will just get worse .they already terrify the elderly .if nobody ever stands up to them and then something happens to someone you know or in your family everrybody wants to know why nobody came to help .we couldnt live with that so went to our neighbours aid .

Good on you for doing it. Its getting rarer for people to intervene due to recent deaths by " good samaritans" this is a sign of todays society. We actually discussed this last night at a meeting i had. People get scared tp report crimes they witness in fear of repocussions etc. However Im a big believer in doing what right. Yep sometimes at a cost. I always ring the police and make sure i take detailed accurate discriptions.

I know what you mean about no one doing anything to help other people, i seen a car knock down a biker whilst we were in a que of traffic about a mile long yet i was the only person that seen it, How can this be.

I don't know if its they fact they just want to keep the peace or if they are just lazy and can't be bothered to help there fellow man.

This is a really tricky one nowadays. I'd like to think that we'd do the same as you but until we're in that situation you just don't know. My husband knew the man that worked at Barclays who was killed recently because he tried to stop a gang beating up a homeless guy and I told him that if he came home and told me he'd done the same (and not been killed, obviously), rather than being proud I'd be cross with him for risking his life and leaving behind a wife and 2 young girls. How wrong is that though,? 5 or 10 years ago I would'be been as proud as punch of him.

I think people are just terrified of repercussions so keep their heads down which isn't right but you can't really blame them. I think what you did was incredibly brave and caring and hopefully they'll not bother you, shame everyone else can't just go ahead and do what you did, but I can totally see why they don't.

Thanks for the kind comments. We do need to stick together and stand up and show we will not put up with it anymore.

I guess the main thing i find sick is the fact that the kids know the law and how to bend it. They know all the tricks, hoods then helmets to make dna harder to trace ( why they dropped them???). Im 100% the kids police caught were them, 99% sure i saw at least one of them. Again they know keep your hoods on and they will get away.

Moped theft no one charged and one is taken away for canabis charges. I feel sorry for my neighbour, car in pound (no soc in the area) moped screwed ( plastics ripped and cracked) and high chance of no arrests. Kids walk away with nothing, no loss to them free to cause havoc again and again. When he went to bed he had a car and moped now nothing.
