Strange call from British Gas

Had a strange call from British Gas today, went something like this:

BG: Hi there. it's British Gas
Me: Hi
BG: You've been with British Gas quite a long time now haven't you?
Me: If you say so
BG: Well, you have, haven't you?
Me: If you say so, you've got the info on your system.
BG: I can only get your info up if you've been with British Gas for quite some time
Me: Right, what am I meant to do then? How can I make myself be with British Gas for a long time so that you can get my info up?
BG: Hangs up.

Now I was being a little awkward as I like to think that if they're saying something like I've been with them for a long time then they've had the decency to check that's true first. But why do they say they can only look at my details if I've been with them for a long time? What exactly is a long time?

I guess they were trying to offer me something (an expensive capped service?) as a reward for being with them for a long time, 2 months now I should add!!!! Why the weirdness and why hang up on me?

I used to work for a sales company i'm not going to name any names but their offices are in Maidstone. Anyway we used to call people on behalf of British Gas and that sounds quite similar to the script we had to follow. We phoned everyone on a database asking them if they've been with BG for a long time, if so then it was on to the next part;

As a long term customer we would like to reward you for your good custom by offering to put you onto this tariff (the special tariff changed every few weeks)

Anyway basically it wouldn't have been BG phoning but a company trying to sell BG's products, BG then pays them a commission for every sale.

Bear in min we had absolutely no notes on the customer just a name, contact number & DOB, the rest we took ourselves from the customer.

I don't think anybody should be allowed to telephone, call at your home or send you a letter selling you anything.

A lot of people are on the internet and can find what they want, at the push of a button.

I'm sick to death of being bothered with the constant harrassment and carp i am daily fed with :x rant over.

You give your number away most of the time, when you sign up for something and tick the I would like third parties to contact me etc

I would recommend every making sure they are not listed in the telephone book and also put their name on the TPS list and always make sure they tick / untick that box

Personally I just get as many swear words in as I can before they hang up!

Sounds about right, as far as I know I'm on the cheapest tariff.

How long is a long time?

Why only customers who have been with them for a long time?

Why say I have and then ask the question, why not just ask?

It made one company go away in the end, about 50 calls and they still hadn't got the picture about me not wanting them to call me so I spoke to the manager and said that if they want to phone it's their choice but all they're going to get is a load of verbal abuse. They kept phoning for a little while longer but soon gave up!

I wish i could be this rude, i also, so wish my gran could be, she is a nightmare replying to scams etc..

She always thinks, she is gonna win, we helped her move about 5 week's ago and changed her number etc...

She has already started replying again though to god know's where.

She is a complete nightmare, i love her to bit's but she does annoy me at times.

Too soft and naive, for her own good.

Long time basically meant that they hadn't recently switched supplier i.e.6 months, the reason for asking if it had been a long time is because you can make a potential customer feel really valued if you tell them how they've been an excellent customer for long term and a way of saying thank you is putting them on this new special tariff. That usually swings the sale for you.

It's a bit dodgy if you phone someone and say hi i'm calling from British gas you've been with us a long time haven't you?

rather than;

Hi i'm calling from British Gas, our records show that you've been with us a long time, can you jut confirm that's correct for me?
