Strange tecchie question...

Hey,

I've got a modem/router that throws out a wireless signal and I use my laptop wherever - garden this afternoon!! :-)
Is it possible to use the ethernet port as a kind of router so I can plug in other devices (VOIP phone in my case) .. ?

Did I read that this was a feature of Windows7? (or at least it would shut off the ports power if not being used..)

The router has nothing to do with the operating system you're using.

As long as the device / voip phone you're connecting has an ethernet port then it should work.
You may need to forward the ports from your router to the device though.

You can. You need to run the internet connect sharing wizard, and share the incoming wireless connection over your wired ethernet network card.

Just re-read your question.. as Chiptivo mentioned you can do that.

But you might want to plug the voip adapter straight into your router as a wireless connection can add lag and is prone to drop outs.

your post is a bit vague but really ignore the above, no, you can't just plug a phone into an ethernet port if thats what your asking

The OP does mention that its a voip phone not an ordinary one.

Though that's a moot point if its just a usb one and not an ethernet one.

Hi guys,

Sorted! 'Bridging' the wireless and the Ethernet port does the trick.

Internet->Wireless Card in laptop.
Phone (with ethernet port) into port on laptop!

Perfect, can work in the garden now! :-)
