Streaming to Ps3 using Windows media player 11

Has anyone else had problems trying to stream media to their ps3 using only windows media player 11 and vista?
I have, its been really doing my head in for 2 days, i googled and googled only to find the same info over and over about opening media player, going to library and selecting to config media sharing. My Ps3 would just not appear under the devices as it was supposed to, as an unknown device. So i had to mess about until i got it. And i now have it working, and this is what got it working for me..
My initial problem was my ps3 wouldnt appear in the devices to share to, so eventually i uninstalled Zonealarm, as even though i was switching it off i was still not finding my darn ps3. So, uninstalled, and with windows firewall on i switched on file sharing through network center and then again in media player, i then restarted my laptop. i kept my ps3 on the whole time. when i restarted i went back into media player and went to media share and it had me configure it again, and this time my 'unknown device' was there!! i can only assume Zonealarm still has an effect even though it is switched off.
after removing it completely i got streaming working on my first attempt, even with windows firewall on! and it is working perfectly, i am watching a divx file right now.
Hope this helps someone, and feel free to message me or add me as a friend no-ice through your ps3.

Are you wired or wireless? I'm having the same problem tbh with vista too and wmp11

both my laptop and ps3 are wireless, they both connect to internet fine...always have. do you have zonealarm?

Works instantly with XP [via WMP 11] which remains the OS of choice at the moment IMO.

You can stream everything except MKV [which is a shame].

If on Vista, try TVersity rather than WMP 11..

see, thats the useless info i kept finding everywhere. It does not always just work instantly as i found out and as it seems t0mm is too. That info doesnt help anyone and its the one thing that made me lose patience when trying to sort mine. I found many posts asking for help with the same problem as mine with both XP and Vista, there seemed to be no posts in reply offering any tips, they were just told the same thing over and over again...that is just works or use TVersity.

I dont like TVersity, used it with my 360. I kind of refuse to use it. I might ring sony up later and get them to explain to me.

t0mm, can you activate file sharing then restart your machine, then go into media player and try again? if you only have the windows firewall im guessing it could work.

cool, i was beginning to wonder if this would even work as a quick google search didnt help. i shall try, thanks

edit, tried and nothing happened. oh well

I know how frustrating this can be, I took me days to get mine working. Turned out my Norton firewall was stopping WM11 from detecting the PS3, worked perfectly once I set it to 'full trust' level in Norton network map. Hope this helps

i would like to add another point to this, as my connection disappeared and my steaming stopped. i fixed by doing the following -

1. Go to network sharing center
2. Click view status (next to connection)
3. Click on properties (not wireless properties)
4. Click on sharing tab
4. Untick the box that says 'allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection'

As soon as i done that my icon appeared on my ps3 again and all is fine. i even have my gf's laptop streaming to the ps3 now.

I would really appreciate if someone could try this if they are having problems and then let me know how they got on. also, ensure 'media sharing' is enabled obviously. Thanks.

I find tveristy a doddle to use with my ps3, plus it converts non playable files on the fly when streaming.

Does TVersity work wirelessly leefal?
#12
Yup, I'm using it with vista also. There's settings on it specificaly for the ps3 and 360.

Other good streming progs are

Nero MediaHome

winamp remote it uses the orb software(not so good for video streaming though)

twonkyvision.

there's loads more, but those the ones that come to mind. TVersity being my fave and its free.
