Student Loans - Any body in the know?

Hello all, i was wondering if you could help me. I'll be returning to university for my third year in September, i have applied for my loan and i thought everything was sorted. then my brother (who will be starting uni this September) got his loan information. Apparently he is entitled to a grant (of approx £2800) and i am not.

i was wondering if anybody out there knew why he is getting a grant and i'm not and more importantly how can i get one as well.

i would look on the student loans website myself but i seem to be having some problems with my internet (DNS errors) and i can only get on sites i have visited.

please help me out i have had a part time job all the way through college and uni, there is no way my lazy bum of a brother should have more money than me. this probably sounds like jealousy, and probably is i just dont see how he can be entitled to it and im not

thanks

Best way to find out is to phone them up, did he go means tested? If your parents are split etc and he went means tested, he will get more, same rules apply if he has something like Dyslexia.

since i started uni my parents have seperated, this has affected me though as i am now able to borrow more money. The amount of repayable loans we are allowed are identical, it only this extra grant that is different

Is it not to do with when you started your course...some people are entitled to bursarys others arent...

thats what i was wondering, i don't know whether he is entitled to it because hes starting this year and im just continuing.

That sounds like a maintenance grant. You are usually entitled to one if your parents earn less than so much. So if your brother has one, I don't see why you shouldn't be entitled to it.

When you were filling out your student loan you should have checked the box that said apply for all grants and bursaries I'm entitled to, which should have required your parents to send off evidence of their past years earnings.

Depending on the subject your brother is studying...the government are providing grants where they have a low uptake on applications.

it is a maintenance grant which is why i'm so confused as to why im not getting one and he is, unless new rules have come in since i started and he started i see no difference between our applications

BEst thing to do is phone up your local LEAas they are the people i believe who deal with your forms etc. They should be able to advise you if there is any forms you need to fill in to get what your brother got.

yeah i rang student loans (got the number off the website, seems the it guys got their thumb out) and they couldn't see any reason why he should get a grant and me not. they've emailed my local LEA and they are supposed to ring me back.

thanks for the help everyone! (will leave rep in a bit)
