Stupid DVLA

I bought a saxo 6ish months ago, but it was a bag of w*nk to put it nicely, so i only had it 2 weeks and sold it on without a log book, phoned the DVLA, they said it was ok to do that, just to write them a letter telling them id sold the car on - which i did and sent it recorded delivery.

This morning, i just got a letter from the DVLA - crapping myself thinking id got a ticket when infact they were telling me to renew the tax on the saxo, so its still in my bloody name!

Dont really wanna ring them as it costs a bloody fortune seen as i dont have a landline i have to ring from my mobile, and im so angry with them anyway!

Anyone know if i can pop into my local DVLA office to sort it out, cos a friend told me, if the people who now own the saxo get a ticket, itll be me who gets the fine/points!

What a great start to the day ...

you'll have a 'local' DVLA centre, whether it's really local and you can pop in I'm not sure, you will be able to ring them though.
My car's had its' plates cloned, the police said I have to notify the DVLA, when I rung them and told them the full story I asked "now what?", they said "nothing", I asked if they told any authorities that got offences to trace that my car has been cloned, they said no, I asked why I bothered to call them then, they said because I have to, although it serves no purpose whatsoever!!!!
Good luck on your dealings with them, your saving grace is that you recorded the letter, they can't deny receiving it.

did you have a reciept for the sale of the car ? and out of interest what happened to the V5? (log book?)

In past experience with the ammount of vehicles used on the road which are not registered, the last owner will get from time to time parking tickets, speeding tickets, keeper enquiries from the OLD BILL!!! :whistling: and we tend to get a bit annoyed when the last owner has failed to notify the change of keeper :x

My sugestion is if you have sold the vehicle you sort out with DVLA today!!! that your no longer the keeper I appreciate the phone call might cost you a bob or two but think of the worry when various tickets come dropping through your door.. so dont put off today which tomorrow will bite you in the back side, you may be able to sort it at your local dvla office.. :whistling:

Not only tickets to worry about - what happens if the vehicle is involved in a 'hit and run'? Try telling the police that it's not your car & you got rid of it ages ago but never told the DVLA, & see if they believe you!

I work in the DVLA!

THey are not letting anyone in or out. And sorry, only know about driving licence issues, have nothing to do with car stuff! ;)

Here's a question for you Mr DVLA (I think I know the answer - but just checking) !!

Can you transfer a car owner between close family members without it being included in the "previous owners" count ? I.e. parent to child..... ?

I dont think you can, but it's worth a go ?

Hey Josh, i was in the same boat as you about 4 weeks ago, sold a car in november gave the log book to the new owner as i work with her told her to fill it in and send it off, 4 weeks ago got a letter through saying the tax was due o nthe 31 of Jan, so had a word with her and she said she forgot (great eh), anyways after checkin DVLA website it says i have to send a letter to them telling them the new owner, car make etc etc, which i did first class, however they will not update there records until the new owner also confrms they are the owner, luckily she sent the log book and it got to the DVLA in time, about a week ago i got a confirmation letter from them saying there records had been updated and i was to ignore any further letters regarding my old car.

So basically you can send a letter telling them you dont have it anymore, but until they get confirmation from the other party they will not update there records.

Wow alot of writing there haha

To cover yourself I would also fill in the "sold vehicle" part of your V5 and send it off.

Im back.

This morning i emailed the new owner, asking if hed recieved a log book, he didnt get back to me before i set off.

Went to the DVLA, and as an above poster mentioned, sending that letter in only covered me for that month - i havent been covered.
Anyway, gave them the log book now with the new owners details, as far as im concerned, its all sorted now.
And not to worry anymore.

That was, until i got home, and got an email from the buyer....
Hes sold the car on :geek: again, with no log book, so i havent even got a clue where the car is now, but now im worried he might turn around and say he never had the car, where do i stand now :-(

I don't fing well believe this!!!!

I have just opened a letter that came this morning and it is from the DVLA!!

I sold a car back in Nobember. The tax was due to run out in November and I had already received my reminder.

I just ignored it as I was not keeping the car. I sold the car on and sent the details to DVLA.

I have just received a fine for £40 for not renewing the tax or declaring it SORN!!!

Fing thick b*stards. It is not my car anymore, I sent the new owner details off back in November.

Where do I stand on this one!!!!

Same sort of thing which happened to me....
Did you sell it with the log book or not?
#25
Yes, I sent the details off in November stating the new owner and such. The car had a knackered gear box so either they have decided to scrap it (they only paid me £200 for it) or they have not yet got around to fixing it and it is in their garage or something. Hence the reason why they may have not taxed it.
#26
Did you send it recorded or just in the normal post, as they may claim they never got it
#27
Just normal.

Even if they did not receive it it would have been nice to have been informed rather than slapping me with a £40 fine or even more if I don't pay it in less than 4 weeks.

Yes they sent me a tax reminder through the post but this was about a month before the tax was due on the car. And considering I was selling the car I just binned it as it would not be my problem. I filled in the log book details later that month and sent it off telling them of the new owner.

I will not be paying the fine, not now not ever. They can jail me for it, and I still will not be paying it when I get out!!

So all in all it will cost the Governemnt even more nmoney because they will have to feed me and accomodate me for the odd month or so inside!!!

Oh dear, i bet its got lost, or they didnt get it :geek: your going to need to get it sorted, as the vechile is still in your name, your liable for all fines/points, get down to your local DVLA or ring them, your in the same boat as me, except im fortunate there hasnt been any tickets or fines ATM!

Im just hoping they sort this out before the tax runs out on the saxo, cos i aint paying no fines, specially since theyve just filled in my old log book and sent it off internally - i got them to stamp it aswell, so cant say they didnt get it!
#29
Just a quick update, shouldnt be a problem, got an email from my buyer, they have the details of the person who bought it from them, so looks like itll be out of my hands from now on :D
#30
Good luck Josh!! Hope you get it sorted
#31
I think it will be sorted :)
Least thats a weight off my shoulders, im going to stop worrying about it now :)
