Am planning a week long trip to Norway.
3 days in Tromso and 4 days down south (Bergen area).

Any suggestions/recommendations ?

Is driving (car hire) recommended to see places around ?

Read that alcohol is very expensive in Norway, thanks for the heads up.

Is it safe to drive in norway ?

Cruise from Bergen... and definitely get your alcohol duty free and get it sealed at the airport so it can travel with you.

I visit Norway about 3-4 times an year and the North of the country, at least once in a year. So I dare to give you some advise :)

Tromso is best for nature lovers. Forget about the alcohol! I am sure, you are not spending a fortune to go there and get drunk! I have been there a couple of times and just love it. I would advise you do Dog-Sledging. It's pricey but worth every penny. You have to go through a tour agency to get these sort of activities done. A reliable list is given at:

Bergen is a very pretty place. Enjoy the city having a stroll around many of its lovely lanes. Look for Norway in a nutshell excursion from Bergen. That is a very popular 1 day excursion. You will have to book it in advance. The link:

I would not advise you to hire a car for such a short duration. You wont see all these lovely places without taking those conducted tours. Contrary to many other conducted tours in the continent, Norwegian ones are very well organised and are extremely punctual and give you all that is promised for in their brochures :)

Have a nice trip!

Beautiful country, very nice people but the most expensive place I have ever been! Been twice-once for a football match and once to see bruce springsteen-landed at airport, went to hotel and then to burger king for what I imagined would be a cheap lunch-burger,fries and a drink-twelve quid! and that was 5 years ago!

Oh, personally I would far rather see the northern lights than the sun at midnight. One can see the sun most days :-D

each to their own though

Definitely agree with the dog sledging - we did it in Tromso in February - also reindeer sledging. The special thing for me though was the Northern Lights - even though they were a bit elusive.

We had a BK lunch in Tromso - came to about £30 for two of us.... Everything is expensive.

Sounds like best suggestion is to take out a second mortgage. Hope you have a good time.

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions ....

Really want to do dog sledge and snow mobile, but these wont be offered in June.

Dont want to visit in winter when its always dark and cold.

Don't buy one of those hideous knitted jumpers like my father-in-law did - he looks like Bill Oddie on crack.

seems bizarre that you want to do winter activities and the obvious highlight is the aurora borealis yet the main impetus to go is to see the sun :w00t:

just go later in the year and get the best of both worlds (september onwards)

wow I didn't realise it was so expensive there! I've been wanting to go to Norway for years but I can't until I finish uni and get some money coming in lol sounds like i'm going to need it!
