Personally, it has been the worst summer I can ever recall in that its been cold(er), wet, cloudy and very little sun to speak of.

2007 wasn't much better but I put that down to a fantastic 2006. Remember that?

What worries me is that many scientists predicted this a few years back in that Britain's climate is changing to milder warmer winters and wetter colder summers.

Certainly true here down south (Brighton). I didn't once have to scrape ice off my car this winter which was a first but summer has been a disaster. What makes it worse is that late early Autumn breaks abroad are very expensive.

Yet another reason to escape this country (lol).

It's not as bad as you think it's been! It's just a typical British summer:

There is no way this has been a typical British summer. Since when have the BBC EVER got the weather right? I can pretty much guarantee that when they say its going to be sunny then its a cloudy day.

Not bad for £1,000,000,000 a year spent by the met office ;-)

Just back from a weeks camping with the kids and we had very little sunshine, most days were overcast and cool, BUT!!!!!!, that was absolutely spot on for taking them out and about sightseeing, walking, adventure playgrounds and the like, better in my view than sweating me nads off in the blazing sun. However!, now that the school hols are about over it would be nice to relax in the garden with a drop of sunshine.....and vino of course :-D

August is usually pretty poor for weather. Why else do we all groan when we hear the phrase 'British summer'?

http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/david-randall-august-is-the-cruellest-month-so-why-does-it-still-surprise-us-907052.html
decribes lots of past August weather and has this:
You may need to read the following three times to absorb its shocking impact, but it is a provable, statistical fact that, for large swathes of Britain (most of the North-east, Lancashire and the Cheshire Plain, the Scottish Borders, Shropshire, parts of East Anglia and the East Midlands), August is the wettest month, not just of the summer, but of the entire year.

may be true for those areas but it pssed down all of july here and hasnt rained since the end of july. just one big cloud over the south of england ever since. practically everyone I speak to say they would love to leave this country for better climes, better government.... the list is too long;-).

Summer has ended and my Grandad is still here and reasonably healthy, neither of which we were expecting or even daring to hope for. He is still here for my 21st birthday next week, I couldnt ask for more.

You know why you've not had any rain - because it's rained every day of August, I think anyway, it certainly seems like it - here in the south west!!
I think you've got a bad case of the grass is greener. It is certainly very long, lush and green here.

I remember you wishing for this. I am happy for you and hope that you have a really lovely birthday celebration with him and everyone else. xx
