im very pale and would like a natural looking healthy tan nothing too excessive. you read about the dangers all the time so im a bit worried , i dont want to damage my skin.

when i asked at a salon they said tanning is safe as long as you use the creams and only go on for ( for me ) 3 mins, once or twice a week at the most ?

All in moderation as they say... my friend dismisses the cancer bed slogan that they get as utter guff... but he does work for a sun bed company so I doubt he'll be slagging them off.

fake tan is much safer :)

Tanning = skin damage, simplez.

That said I'm all for some light exposure to the sun when I'm on holiday in Spain, would never use one of those "beds" though.

The salon has its business interests to think of, so I very much doubt you were going to be told "no" by staff.
#5
Are you only looking to tan the parts that show?

If so, then I would just take regular walks and eat your lunch outside. A bit of natural sunshine is good for your mood and will help your skin tan. Make sure you always put on sunscreen, you will still tan if you use it.

fake tan is safer but comes off on the bed sheets

I'm a pale odd looking fellow, but I wouldn't go near them :)

A good one doesn't.

They really said that? Very unprofessional for a business to claim they are safe - thats pretty much the same as a tobacco company saying cigarettes are safe, as long as you smoke filtered ones ;-)

what about just using the gradual tanning creams.. is there some reason you've ruled these out?? My problem with sunbeds (Im very pale too!) is that if I dont go on them every few days it doesnt work much at all..
#11
Real pale skin is better than a faked up tan any day in my book.

Suntan beds... why take the risk?
#12
I occational use them just before i go on holiday when i really dont need to as i tan well but i find you smell rather rank when you come out and that its cheaper and easier with fake tan.
#13
I'm sure you can get a spray tan, don't think they are too expensive.

Having a tanned complexion myself I've never really worried. Although I know that tanning beds aren't good for you.
Also as somebody pointed out, fake tan can look really really awful if applied incorrectly. I swear I've seen some people glowing!!
#14
what the salon actual said was sunbeds are safe as long as you dont get burned , they said its getting burned that does the damage , no burn no damage , im just wondering if this is true

Whenever I think of spray tans I always think of Ross out of friends getting his fake tan - it was so funny, he ended up getting the same area tanned 3 or 4 times.

I would love a tan but i wouldnt use sunbeds, i know a few woman in their thirties who have used them quite a bit and they have REALLY bad wrinkles!

Id rather just be pale tbh :)

try fake bake fake tan or san tropez (cant spell it but im sure you get the idea)
there more expensive but work really well. dont rub of on the sheets and last for ages.
im really pale skinned and i found that when i used the sunbeds i just turned bright read and didnt go anyother colour.
hope this helps :)

No of course its not! Think about it, the sun can cause serious damage (from burns to sunstroke leading to premature aging of the skin and ultimately skin cancers) but you would need a few hours direct light for serious damage - these machines will do the same damage in a matter of minutes - how can anyone think that is possibly safe?

I've used sunbeds fairly often before but stopped after hearing on that embarrassing illnesses program that using a sunbed increases the risk of skin cancer by 70%. That's a massive risk in my opinion.

I've switched to St Tropez Aero Bronze (just a link off google to show you which one it is http://www.amazon.co.uk/St-Tropez-Aero-Bronze-150ml/dp/B001ARJ0K8) and as long as you don't go over the top with it, it looks natural, doesn't make you go too dark and I've worn white vest tops the day after applying it and it' not marked them at all - fantastic stuff I think

its fine, i can sit in the sun for 30mins and go nice and brown no need for long exposures for me.:p

im not the darkest but not the palest. I have gone on a few sun beds esp if i am going out for a special occasion , i like looking tanned but dont like the fact it can damage your skin. I would say everynow and then is fine but not all the time x

They're talking crap.

How do they know how much damage is occurring in the sub-dermal layer of your skin by merely looking at it?
#35
the sun and sunbeds can be beneficial (in small doses) but obviously as everyone has said too much is very damaging. i go on once a week which in my opinion is ok

That goes against the opinion of medical experts - its pretty dangerous to suggest such things. Its very similar to saying 'I only smoke when I go out once a week, which in my opinion is okay' - of course its your choice to go on sunbeds, or to smoke, but that doesn't make it safe to do so..

the safe limit for use of sunbeds is 50 times a year, so almost once a week :p
i would never go on everyday like some people that is just silly.
sunbeds can help with acne and SAD and also depression, so dont knock the sunbeds completely
#38
a close friend of mine has just been told that a small lump/spot on her face is skin cancer, from many years of sunbeds.......just be careful xx

Sunbeds are like cigarettes - they help you look cool but they might give you cancer.

Use with care.
