Hi all,

Just wondering if any of you have surround sound systems at home?

Im interested in getting one but dont really know much about them eg. Is it better to get wireless, does that affect the sound much, are certain brands better etc

Any help would be appreciated, especially if you can recommend a good reliable cheap option

cheap options are naff, go to a proper hi-fi store surround sound test room and see which ones you like

You can go into shops for demonstrations if you need convincing.
I'd not go back to anything less than 7.1. However you need to think about the size of the room and the speakers.

There is a big variety out there, I'd listen to a few different systems before parting with your money. They are not cheap.

Wireless systems tend to need an extra power source, if wires are an issue then I guess it should be considered.

I tend not to buy cheap electrical things anymore, the quality isn't there, normally poor craftmanship and they probably won't last long before I spend more money on another system.

5.1 is more than enough for any room (1 sub woofer and 5 speaker) - ultimately it comes down to how much you want to spend. Personally, i would go for a separate amp (Onkyo, Yamaha or Sony) and a 5.1 speaker set - nothing other than Kef 2005

This would allow you to run virtually any thing through for full surround.

Alternatively go for an all in one package which includes the DVD/Amp and speakers - this option is a lot cheaper and less complex

I would start with a budget mate - there is something good for the money and recommended in any price range; but you do get what you pay for. I would answer the questions below then buy the stuff I have on eBay at the moment  Answer below and peoples advice will be better and you're more likely to get what you need.

1. Price?
2. What will you need it for now (music, cinema/films, TV, DVD, Blu-ray, Computer connection, Consoles)?
3. Size, what can you get away with from the missus (my new set up takes over the room completely ?
4. What will you need it for in future(music, cinema/films, TV, DVD, Blu-ray, Computer connection, Consoles)?

I am not sure on the rules about this, but my kit is item number 140348678529 on the auction site. Feel free to have a look as this is obviously what I would recommend for my circumstances because its what I bought. Will give you an idea of some formats and sizes and what this sort of kit does as I spent a while on the description.

I really don't want to break any rules here and I am expecting this to be overkill for what you need (unless you're wanting HD straight away) so I am not trying to sell this to you, just provide some information so I hope this is ok. :)

I bought a second hand Sony amp from av forums for £100, then some second hand Tannoy 5.1 speakers for £50. It sounds amazing, rattles the windows upstairs with the right film!!!

I definitely recommend buying seperates, it doesn't have to be pricey
