How can I get into swimming?

I've been trying to pick it up but not getting very far, my arms seem to move but I can't seem to get my legs moving properly and I think this hinders me a little!

I don't seem to float :(

Go to your local pool, or contact your local council as they all have swimming tutors and book yourself some lessons.
You don't float, but it takes practice.

most clubs like the david lloyd clubs do lessons and you dont have to join just pay about £5 for a group lesson or a bit more for one on one

oh my god you swim like me! I move my arms and legs and dont hardly move anywhere, just float! lol

I am the same, I swim on one lungful of air, I cant get the breathing and swimming thing together and I am also a better swimmer under the water than on top (prefer it really)

At least you lot float, I flop like a wet fish on land. Swimming is out for me! Great for all those who can do it though.

I was hoping I didn't need lessons :D

I'm off for a double session tonight - One pool with a challenging deep end and the other a deep end where I can stand with my head above water at the deepest level which helps as it means less chance of drowning :w00t:

U don't HAVE to do lessons, but it will stop you getting into bad habits early.
For starters, you could buy a float - there are lots on the market, but the simple rectangular shaped ones are the easiest to use.
2 things we did at school:
1) Put the float in your hands, stretch them out in front of you and kick hard. Your face may well be in the water, but it improves your legs and helps you get the right position.
2) Squeeze the float between your thighs and use your arms - great for an upper-body workout, but obviously restricts the legs.

Swimming is great exercise... hope you get into it :-)

p.s. alternative to 1) is to put the float under your belly, but you may need to tie it somehow....

i swim 3 times a week and it is amazing, men cant float, dont know why - try and get some lessons or just keep at it try backstroke its the easiest but dont use arms just use legs and feet

Advice from a toad:

First find some water (enough water to ensure you move when you flap your arms and legs about) - it helps

Next practice holding your breath, but remember to breathe out after a while - it helps.
continue to practice breathing - in and hold, out and hold, in and hold etc...

Then practice floating by holding something permanently fixed by the waters edge, breathing in and holding, and gently kick your feet in the water, your body will work with you in time.

As your confidence grows so will your swimming skills, I should know, I'm the toad.

I like going under water holding my breath so you kinder float, then slowly release air so that you sink like a submarine, hours of fun :)

haha, id say thats what i look like now...

its a shame though, when i was still in school i used to go once a week with a pal..for fun - and now its my worse nightmare! i stay far far way from swimming pools.

really - I have never met a man that could float:thumbsup:
and could never understand why!
