It's not just about late payments.

I would check on M.S.E. and have a read through and get some clues.

i was serious, i thought some companies look for a certain 'score' before they accepted someone, so those with no credit history suffer even if they are in no debt etc, whether they are up to date with payments or not.

That's correct. The mother in-law wanted to rent a TV a while back (I know but who would ague.) and got turned down because she had NO credit history.
Seems some companies will not give you credit until others have done first.

Every company has different criteria.

It can be a multitude of different reasons, i.e length of time at present address, number of addresses in the last 2/3/4 years, number of defaults, late payments, CCJ's, Available credit compared to income etc, etc, etc.

There is not a universal score, the CRA's make up one and sell it to you at a premium. It's not worth a penny because it is only a representation, no company will use the same information.

Well in store i originally applied and it was refused

the man entered my name the wrong way round

So my first name as surname and surname as first name

and he said you can do it for 3 months now!

I applied online and I got an email I can write to the credit check department to ask why!

But do you think the name will made the difference?

it is no good writing to the credit check people as they dont refuse you credit, the company applying does, experian or any other credit company will not know why you where refused, they only hold information. It really does depend on many things, like i said orange will not give me a contract nor will they tell me why, yet t-mobile, o2, voirgin and vodaphone will give me two contracts, like i said phone them its worth a shot

If you were told 'Computer says no" you are entitled to have a human check and give you an answer.

If declined, they will tell you to check your credit file. They won't tell you anything on top of this.

Check your Equifax report as well, some companies don't report to Experian.

Some people have quite a few running concurrently especially if they are cash-back ones. There's money to be made. :)

fyi 3 will give *anyone* a 18 month contract.
The credit thing is odd... despite money in the bank, regularly paid loans and credit card, and a healthy business account, there are still occasions when I get turned down for things. No apparent reason, and i'm not overstretched vs income.
