Talk Talk Broadband

My grandparents have Talk Talk Broadband. Did a speed test, on TT website and the download speed is less than 1000 kbps I did the test again and now its only at 100 kpbs!!! Rang TT who said that we need to do 3 speed tests at different times of the day before they will investigate further.

They did have a VERY old computer which they upgraded 2 weeks ago. Since upgrading the slowness has got worse (it was slow on the old comp, but not this slow).

Grandparents did have Tiscali, they moved and were given Talk Talk.

My impression is that it is utter rubbish, it cant even load a simple webpage. I need some advice on what I could try.

What you'll need to do is connect the router to the Engineers socket first. Then run speed tests when its connected there. If you are getting the max speed, try again at a different time of the day.

If its the same again, you are getting max speed, then you have a problem with your Internal wiring. If the speed is actually dropping, then theres a problem between your grandparents house and the local cabinet / exchange.

For Talktalk to get involved, thats exactly what they will end up asking you to do.

Thanks, the engineers socket means? Sorry!

I am going to take my laptop round and try to see what speed I get on there. I am wondering if it could be the new computer?

Yeah, test it with the laptop.
The engineers socket is also referred to 'test socket'
a simple search of that will help you find where yours is, its basically where the cables go into the wall, but making sure the box they go in is the 'main' onel ets say
Good luck!

I am having terrible trouble with talktalk at the moment.

Half the websites I want to access it just won't load. I tried talking to their tech department and they got me doing all kinds of stuff - test sockets and clearing caches and different browers, changing passwords and borrowing routers - you name it, we tried it.

Then customer services happened to phone to see if I was happy with the service, and I told them I wasn't and what was going on, and they said that a problem loading certian websites was usually a problem at the exchange and they would look into it.

Three days later and some websites have improved, but the speed is terrible! Things were better than this on Virgin 2mb!

I am also wih talktalk, its not the speed that bothers me, to me thats been fine even though we have 2 Xbox's, a PC and 2 laptops hooked up to the router sometimes all on at once it will still run smoothly and can download fast. My only problem with talktalk is the constant disconnections at almost the same time everyday, becomes frustraiting :x especially if I am in the middle of doing something.

Your Grandparent's mistake is having Talk Talk broadband.

Worst ISP around.

Just get them a MAC code and let them change providers (assuming they are not in a contract)

In your experience (although I suspect you are one of the ones who actually has never used them, but like to talk crap), I've found them to be fantastic.

I'm a Customer Service Advisor for a broadband company. I would say my experience of the company is of a much higher level than just your personal (1) opinion.

They setup their broadband on people's lines when they only ask for phone service (illegal)

Worst customer service/tech support I have ever come across. They are one of the only companies that have LLU services in my area so went to sign up but after speaking to them that put me off completely, one ladie told me that their upload speed was an impressive 40gb :w00t:

Not a day goes by without speaking to a customer about the appalling service they have received from talktalk.

Talk talk. Great band, crap isp. But of course I'm just talking crap

It's not just my experience, we have it at home, my dad has it, both sets of grandparents have it and both my best mates, works fine for all of us.

Thats really interesting and great, I'm ecstatic for you, really I am but like I said I have spoke to hundreds maybe thousands of customers who will have nothing good to say about them apart from they make good adverts.

Your 5 or 6 family members are lucky and obviously Talktalk provide a good service in your area, I assume as you state your service is up 24/7 then you have never had to call them, this is also why you are lucky.

Then the point made by dcx_badass is still valid, since you've never actually used them you can't really judge and say they are the worst ISP going on just customer services. Forget about customer services, that doesn't make much of a difference on how your internet performs. As I and others have stated, the broadband they provide is good and up to standards and for me is pretty fast., the only problem I have is getting disconnected at certain times of the day but tell me one ISP where that hasn't happened, I've been with quite a few and has happened with all.

Like I said I have personally spoke to them to sign up but that was enough to put anybody off and dealing with them and customers on a daily basis is enough to form an understanding of how useless they are. Also on a professional level they are awful, speaking to them sometimes when neccessary.

The problem is you are giving me little individual cases of where they are good. I am just telling you that I speak to annoyed customers/ex customers of theirs on a daily basis and get more complaints about how crap they are compared to any other ISP.

Hear nothing but good things about Be and O2 all the time, of course there will be cases where people will say their service is crap. I'm just saying I am probably more experienced to base an opinion as I see it daily from all areas of the country whereas you will base it on the service your friends, family and how your own service performs.

Half the time problems like this aren't down to the SP, I used to visit houses daily where the fault was that of the EU (end user).
Thishttp://www.draytek.co.uk/support/image/bt_faceplate_removed1.jpgis the test socket being reffered too.
I never trust speed test sites and take results from them with a pinch of salt.
As DCX asked what is the line synching at?
@ M_P_H which SP you work for? In my time doing broadband faulting I have heard people moan about almost every provider.

Easynet group so Sky, Ukonline and Easynet.

Hehe I'm not surprised if you are doing broadband faulting as they have a fault so will automatically think the ISP is crap, but as you rightly said a lot of it can be down to the EU or BT, not always the fault of the ISP.

In my experience I hear of way more problems with Talktalk than any other service.

So in other words you're just a script monkey.

As posted above most of the issues are probably down to end user IT knowledge, or lack of.

Don't work for openreach directly anymore, contract now doing D side work so away from the ADSL/SFi thing now.
However in my time doing SFI healthchecks I would say that the companies people complained about most (in no order) Sky, Talk Talk (esp tiscali) and BT.
But these are 3 have most the ADSL market share between them so expected.
You got big cajones than me to publically say that the SP you work for is better than another.

No but I wish. Having to use my brain and decide what words to use all by myself is quite challenging :)

I have less to do with Sky and more the other 2. I have to deal with queries about how rubbish are own service is whilst listening to the stories of their nightmare with talktalk, so I am aware that every company has their faults.

Orange I would say is worst for customer service but overall Talktalk takes the title. Some of the stuff they do is illegal, Ofcom must be regularly involved with those guys.

When you ring sky customer services how much does it cost a minute?

Depends, but just paying is bad enough. I always believe all support should be free. Ukonline is freephone and all Uk based customer services which I see as a big selling point when I personally look for an ISP (no self promotion mods)

Talk talk is free customer support.

In B4 you lie and say it isn't.

I know it is, but that doesn't make it good.

Just making a point, on daft little things like this all ISP's have up and down sides.

It may be " free " but if you cannot get through to customer support, that isn't really much use, nor after you finally get through you end up talking to somebody that knows very little about their own product, is it much help.

An online forum is of no use if your broadband is down.

When my line was changed over from Tiscali to TalkTalk, somehow they changed the phone number on my account. The speeds I had for a month were shocking, it was taking hours to load even a YouTube video. I got my MAC code and left, but had a call from TalkTalk a few days later explaining what had happened. I didn't really listen though, since Customer Services never listened to me - and the fault clearly was with them and not me. The guy did say he was surprised my service worked at all, all I know is I'm glad to have left them, even if I am paying twice as much for BT.
#24
Thanks, what does synching at mean please?
#25
Slightly off topic but to wade in on the customer service front...i work for the telecoms ombudsman (not OFCOM) and hear complaints every day (obviously)...talktalk is a bad company cust. serv. wise but had my own complaints against Sky and get a lot about BT (mainly because they're the biggest company we deal with). in honesty, never heard much about o2's service broadband wise. but we have over 400 member companies (most do a broadband package) so hear a lot about bad service for most companies.

For all of you singing their praises take it from one who knows. When (and it will) it goes t.its up you'll certainly know about it! Talk Talk are being renamed Crap Crap........... now that's true. I could talk non stop about their Crap Crap service but I don't want to bore you to sleep.................ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

The problem is...you only ever hear the bad stories. No-ones going to go to the papers and say 'TalkTalk gave me a really great offer and the service received was excellent',
