Hi - I'm after getting a tattoo kit for a Christmas pressie. I would like a complete kit with guns, ink and whatever else you need to tattoo. Unfortunately I have no idea where to start, I don't know whether it would be better to buy the items individually or get one of the tattoo kits available? Has anyone bought one before or know which are good makes etc?? Any help would be appreciated!! Many thanks.

Start with a training course?

By the time you have finished training you will know exactly what you need and where to get it from. You need to ensure that you both like it and can do it to a high standard before you set out on your own.

Don't know what your budget is? but you maybe better off getting them a quality or custom made gun as apposed to a full kit.

The kits are quite expensive, best bet is to go into somewhere like WHSmiths and take a look inside the tattoo magazines and see what shops and pieces are advertised if no one on here can help you - good luck

Hi Norse - thanks for the advice - any idea where I'd start with this? I hadn't thought of that but I like that idea. Will have a look through some tat mags!

Best route is to start with a dedicated forum (try the one I listed above), you should get all the help you need there. Unfortunately, that is the limit of my knowledge on this subject but I wish you luck in your search.

here?

seriously though a good tattoo (kit) isn't cheap, and a cheap tattoo (kit) isn't good.

Also kit is a personal choice for most tattoo artists, there are too many little variables in kit.

I don't want to buy him rubbish and certainly didn't want to pay a lot for rubbish. Don't mind spending the cash if it's decent kit - Thank you all for all the info I will have a look at the forums and links and should have a lot better idea!!

That was intended more of an example of what not to get! Thats why I followed it with the part about it being a personal choice, a good kit should last a lifetime as everything is replaceable/upgradable, the DX stuff is cheap compared to quality stuff a good kit can cost in excess of £2k
