I have received a letter stating I owe £3600... for child tax credits I received in 2003 which they say I wasn't entitled to... has anyone any stories about how they have recovered money from HM Revenues and Customs?

Blood and stone spring to mind, we are in similar situation as are most people who get child tax credits i believe! Any successful methods appreciated!

Tax credits have always had their heads up their ar***

you really should have kept abreast of what they were giving you, i had to pay back £260.

You're best off trying to negotiate a payment plan back with them. They'll probably take so much of your weekly payments back each week.

i think this happens alot, did to me a few years back while i was self employed, they stopped my entire payments till it was paid :-(

dont panic, as i said that was a few years ago,im sure they have more humane ways of recovering it now!

they are a pain in the butt imo

A few years ago I got a letter telling me that they were overpaying me & that they would get back to me to sort out repayment of the extra.

TWO years later I got my next letter from them stating how much I owed, and ONE year after that I got a 'request' to pay back the extra.

Fast movers!:giggle: Still, at least I knew how much I had been overpaid well before they got round to asking for it.

i have been overpaid the same amount for the last 2 years, last year they just reduced my payments and i was able to pay the 600 back over a period of time, this time however they have completely stopped my payments this happend in may and i wont get any monies until next may until i have paid the amount back. I have been asking them if i can come up with a payment plan option, and they keep telling me it is with a different department who are considering this, well nearly 6mths on and still no response and no monies. i think tax credits does more harm than good as they keep making people pay back for errors they have made.

Tax credits are a mess!

They may well adjust this years tax credits for eg lower the amount you get each month ( which will cover the payment)

Check your paperwork, if it was their error and not yours, i.e. you supplied them correct information - appeal as soon as you possibly can.

They claimed back £1950 from me by stopping my payments until it was paid back but I filled in the appeal form and although it took about six months they paid it all back to me.

What they should do is get rid of tax credits and get rid of Council tax at the same time

interesting fireheaven, thanks for that, they have not mentioned to me about an appeal form, they just said they would pass my details over to relevant department.... obvioulsy just fobbed me off............ sense a call going into them today!

My dad was ordered to pay back nearly £5000 in tax credits last week - They must be on the prowl. I thought getting my £80 water bill last week was a nightmare!

Tax credits are a joke. Some years back mine stopped suddenly for some strange reason and then i had 42 claims from them over a few weeks saying i had no qualifying children. I had done my application online and apparently there was a fault with this. I was told nip down to local tax office with my kids birth certificates and prove it. I could not believe it. I got so down over it i left it for ages and a friend sorted it for me and i eventually got 18mths in one go. After that i have had a request for an overpayment but not that much and they take the amount from our new award.

I have had no tax credits for 18 months, as am paying back a £3k overpayment, was their fault as I rang them & told them hubby had changed jobs (although he wasnt earning a lot more it took it over the threshold where your tax credit goes dwon from about £40 a week to a tenner!) questioned it again this year but no luck will take ages to pay it off!!
how did you go baout gteting yr money back?

i had a letter stating that i was overpaid £299 from two years ago but that claim was a joint one with my ex partner and now as they cant trace him i have to pay it back, i tried to get them to take it straight out of my credit i get now but they say thats not possible so instead i have to pay weekly,

they give it in one hand and take it away with the other !!
