I'm not sure if there is even a section for help but was wondering if anyone was aware of the situation re tax rebates. I was on a placement year from uni 2008-2009 but finished in august 2009 to go back to uni. Despite this, i was paying tax on the basis i was to earn the full wage for the year, but ended up only earning about £3000 in total from the start of the financial year (april) till the time i finished (august), so shouldn't have been subject to tax. Do i claim this tax back or do i get an automatic rebate, i'm worried i may have missed the deadline for the former option.

Thanks in advance

Quite often if you are still working you get the tax rebate back in your salary in March. As you aren't still working it's probably worth ringing your local tax office to find out how to claim it. It won't be too late as the tax year runs until the beginning of April.

You will not be able to get anything until april (end of tax year) but if you leave it to them it could take months, so chase them up. When you owe them money they charge you interest.:)

local tax explain the situ and they should do it all for you

did you get a P60 for tax year 2008/9 - this should have the employer reference which you can get the tax office address for on this site http://search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kbroker/hmrc/locator/locator.jsp?type=1
You need to write to them enclosing your p45 and any other details (eg bank interest forms)
You may also be able to claim a refund for 2008/9 if you were taxed on a week/month 1 basis ( see your tax code on your P60)

I was in the same position when I was in uni, I just went to my tax office and an advisor organised a rebate for me.

i too paid more tax in 2008-2009 and was advised an automatic rebate will not be issued as that was for the previous tax year (something like that) i was advised to write in stating my NI number address and a brief explanation of what has happend and could they investigate by claim. the turn around period is about 12wks apparently but i dont care as long as i get my tax overpayment back lol

Yes but should you owe them money for 12 weeks you will be fined and charged interest :whistling:
