Just looking at taxing my car online. Its sorn atm. However it says that the tax disc will take 5 days to arrive through the post.

So if I tax my car now online, will it be legal to drive even if I dont have the tax disc yet?

"If you prefer to tax in the last few days of the month, there is now an exemption from the offence of not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month and allows time for the new disc to arrive in the post.

The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires."

It won't be. Best bet is to find a post office and do it there. Then you can put it in the car immediately.

no,you have to have the tax disc on show

cheers guys.

Another question. I want to take my other car off the road but it has 5 months left of tax, what do I have to do to get that money back?
banned#5
you can't drive the car without displaying a valid tax disc

the quickest way to obtain a disc is at the post office with either the full V5 for the vehicle along with MOT (if required) and valid certificate of insurance. If you have just purchased the car the green 'new keeper' part of the V5 may be sufficient to tax the car

ask at the PO how to get the 5 months of your tax back - you will only be rebated for full months remaining
#6
And the fact that more strikes are planned the post office is the way to go for a new tax disc
#7
It will as long as you print out a proof.
#8
you can get a form from post office to get some money back, but they will only reimburse for full months

ie:if you have 4 and half months remaining they will reimburse for 4 months
#9
You CAN drive it, as long as it's taxed, up to 5 days AFTER it's run out. Not so sure if it's the same for SORN but you will be fine!

utter garbage and wrong in every sense

it is an offence to drive your vehicle - or keep it on a public road for that matter - without displaying a valid tax disc or being declared SORN

As OP's car is declared SORN, you're right, but if you tax it online, as long as you had valid tax when you taxed it, you can drive with no tax disc until the 5th day of the next month.
#13
Trust me, I KNOW I'm right. Say the tax disc ran out on the 31st and you tax it that day, you have until the 4th until you'll get in "trouble". Please don't try and tell me I'm wrong because unfortunately I know the law!!
#14
It's not ilegal to not have tax, it is ilegal to not display a valid tax disc
#15
if you are stopped by the police then when they do a check on the licence plate it shows up whether you are taxed or insured and obv the registered owner of that vehicle so you wont get 'done' if you have not yet received the disc.

although you could get a fine for failing to display... so upto you :)

A valid tax disc is something you can't get unless you have tax...??? Don't be so ridiculous! It's illegal not to HAVE tax. You can have tax and not display the disc for 5 days into the beginning of the month whilst the disc is being sent. My OH is a copper, my brother is the manager at a Porsche garage and my ex imported cars for a living... I THINK I know.

you do have 5 days grace, but only if you can prove your tax was applied for before the old tax disc run out, i think anyway, so you couldnt have no tax for 3 weeks then, apply on day and drive it, think its only on a continual sorta thing, although saying that i dont know how this would come off under the faliure to display

iv seen some of your posts, and your like fire, ( dont play with fire )

you have to show a valid tax disc on your windshield, if caught without tax showing on your windshield you will recieve a fine, even if you are still waiting for your new tax disc to arrive through the post,:)

baffled salmon you are right you have up to five days to get a new tax disc, but you cannot drive your car without any valid tax showing. i was wrong a wee bit " you are exempt for 5 days" thanks tinkerbell

iv been in trouble before and got a fine for having not showing a valid tax disc, it was neglagince on my part i forgot to tax my car

If you prefer to tax in the last few days of the month, there is now an exemption from the offence of not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month and allows time for the new disc to arrive in the post.

The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires.

nope..

You CAN drive you car for upto 5 days without a valid tax disk AS LONG as you've renewed before expiry date (ie: you can renew on line on the 30th, but post can take upto 5 days, so you can drive between renewal and received date)

your car must be TAXED, not an offence to not be showing a valid as long as its in the post.

Though what you edited is correct. I was actually asking if it was ok with my car being sorn then going back on the road, thus having no tax disc to display. The same rules apply however, your given 5 days
