I have tried to run avast but it gos to the "splash screen" and does a memory test then it closes the box and doesn't do anything after that! What shall I do please?

Try system restore...

I'm no expert but I'd say do a system restore to a time before the problems started, then try

Do as above then try
Avast.com avast is free anti virus software like avg but i think its better.
download then will ask to do a boot time scan.
Finds a lot of bad stuff.
Then allow to start up and update its self.then run a normal scan.

Try the malwarebytes, it has fixed some problems for me that spybot couldn't. I presume you have an administrator account?

Have you done a backup of the stuff you want off the computer just in case?

You need to be careful with registry issues

Right run CCleaner a few times on your registry and try the scan again. (Make sure you have the latest definitions for your scanning software also) After you have done this reboot and see if it is still slow. If it is then you will need to rollback your drivers via the device manager and then get a sturdy driver updater like DriverMax which will update your drivers the safe way and using proper outlets for them so this doesn't happen again.

This will help I am certain.

try all scans in safe mode if possible

if you used a decent internet security like Eset, you wouldnt have problems like this.

free AVs are very limited in their protection.

but they are free

and no one on this site seems to want to spend money investing in protecting their computers

Eset NOD32 is not even in the top 5 for detections and cleaning. Avira is right up there amongst the best (and this is even the free version).

It is worth noting that is easy to protect your computer for free and to keep it solid. So stop scaremongering as you seem to fall into the same boat as many people who think free is shoody.

Nod32 frequently tops the lists.
