I have in my possession a "Tiny" (Mitac 8399) Laptop, which has a frequent fault, when you turn the laptop on the screen can either be: not on at all, very dim or "peachy" (like it should be)...

I've tried replacing the screen cable, which unfortunately didn't fix the fault, wouldn't have thought it to be the backlight, but could be wrong...

removed one of the ram sticks, because the laptop doesn't boot at all with both in (not paired)... also the last time I turned it on the screen didn't come on, until I grabbed it by the top (of the screen)...

I know at the top of the screen at the it has a PCB on show which the screen cable is connected to, is this replaceable?

could be screen or maybe motherboard at fault and you have made sure all cables are in properly if you do have a spare screen run it on that for a bit see if it still does same if not then its a dodge screen that is at fault cant think of anything else

right after finding out how to get the screen to work on both the laptop and monitor, i moved the laptop around a bit after shut down and restarted it... the screen was black, but the monitor showed the desktop

When you changed the screen cable, did you also check the inverter?

in the op when i put I wouldn't have thought it to be the backlight i meant inverter

I'm not sure about this. If the screen is dim I would expect the problem is more likely to be the inverter or backlight. A screen cable or panel problem would more likely cause image distortion. Inverters are about a tenner.

think I'll just sell it, I believe if it was the inverter it would be always dim and not temperamental, not a laptop expert though

yeah, I've done that and it hasn't loosened, I do actually think that it has something to do with the PCB at the top of the monitor, because where the cable connects it doesn't appear to sit like it should (gut feeling).. and I don't know whether you have to replace the whole screen for that or if you can buy the PCB separately
