Techie help needed

The other week my mum switched off my dad's laptop whilst it was in the middle of installing updates. Since then it hasnt been working at all well. Mainly once you try to log in it will not go past the welcome screen (the circle is still running though).

So I went through safe mode to do system restore which seemed at first to work, I then had to install all the updates that were required. This seemed to complete successfully, but again the laptop wouldnt always go past the welcome screen. Then we were asked to install windows service pack 1. That didnt complete successfully, and it wiped the original restore date and created one called service pack 1. When I've tried to restore to that date it completes but it never allows me past the welcome screen when logging in.

Safe mode seems to be working fine so Im guessing there cant be too much wrong with it. I've tried system repair but it didnt do anything

Oh yeah its Vista that we're using

Anybody know what I can do to fix it. I'm ok with computers but not a techie by any means so any help would be much appreciated

Left it on overnight - it just keeps going, and this is everytime we switch it on

Have you tried reinstalling vista from the CD? or tried repairing from the CD?
#5
It's sounding like a format and reinstall to me.
#6
Have you tried running windows update from safemode? You could try and download a service pack 2 and re install that.
#7
try uninstalling (from safe mode) the latest ms updates and start over again. This might solve. or else do a fresh install of OS.
