Technical Help Required...

I need some technical help please and there seems to be a lot of very knowledgeable people on here.

I have a reasonably large collection of DVD's that I am loathe to replace at the moment. Do I buy a DVD player that 'upscales' normal DVD's or do I go for an HDDVD player or Blu Ray? There seems to be a huge price difference.

Will a HDDVD / Blu Ray player upscale too?

Are these upscalers any good? Is the picture quality noticably better.?

Some are quoted as being able to play DivX / AVI formats. Is this the format of ...er ..'contraband' HD's

Can anyone recommend a product they have.? I am thinking of buying this

Comments??

Help would be very much appreciated..:santa:

Looks like a reasonable piece of kit tbh and at £30 its not a big sum of money, costs less than console game.

I would go the way of an upscaler and stick with your existing DVD collection at the moment, wait until the format wars are over and prices come down

Yes they do

As to the contentious subject of whether the picture quality is better my opinion and from experience is that it does provide an improvement over standard DVD even over component.

Yes most are in DivX/Xvid/AVI formats though they are often compressed as well to save space in RAR and/or Zip format as well.

The Sumvision Lynx is a decent cheap upscaling DivX player, certainly better than the Phoenix model by the same manufactuer.

You could always buy a PS3, they are supposed to upscale DVD's quite well (as good as or better than all but the top end players apparently) plus you have the blu-ray player there and a games console too......three for the price of one as it were.

Thanks for all your advice. I think I will go with the cheap upscaler at the moment and wait for the 'proper' gear to come down in price.

Ho Hum..there is always something else! :santa:
