Hi,

My friend is getting a new pc at home - no internet, uses it like a typewriter.

What is the best way she can transfer all her work from the old machine onto the new computer?

Many thanks

Usb stick, drag and drop.

Yep USB would be the fastest way, disc burning is an option but lengthy and not always 100% reliable. If you have a 1GB or 2GB USB memory stick, stick that into a USB port on the old machine, it should come up on the screen, click view files and a new window will appear. Just drag and drop stuff you want to keep into that new window, sorted! :)

Copy the files she needs off the old machine to a USB memory stick and transfer them (keep memory stick as a back-up archive)

memory stick or portable hard drive if it is more than a few gigs of data

if you dont have a usb or hard drive or even a mobile phone with some memory you could take the pc to somewhere with internet access and email all the files to yourself.

Get a router and connect the two computers and use as a home network to transfer the files. Hopefully the old machine will have a LAN port.

As someone else mentioned, it depends how much data she's moving. If it's a lot of pictures or videos it might take a while to move it over with 1 or 2gb memory sticks. If it is more you might want to look at buying an external hard drive which would mean you could move it all over in one go.

couldn't one take out the old pc's hard disk and sticking it in the new pc if it has like an extra port thingie? or sticking it in that other thingie you can put a drive into to 'read' it etc..

Not always easy for people who dont 100% know what they are doing. Home networking can be a right pain in the bum.
