She is 14 and shes had about 6 fits in 2 years....always in her sleep. She has been to the hospital for checks and they said she isnt epileptic........

she also has some tourette type symptoms like random noises and twitches....and has learning difficulties....

i just wonder if its all connected.....

i used to work with someone with tourettes. he used to twitch like screw his eyes up and twitch his head to one side and make random noises squeaks groans and such. He never had any fits though, or not that I was aware of.

Hmmm, Normally Torette's sufferers tend to be free from their ticks etc whilst sleeping so I would be inclined (but not definite) to discount that as a cause of these 'fits'.

On occasions nocturnal seizures can be misdiagnosed as a sleeping disorder and certain sleeping disorders can be misdiagnosed as epilepsy. A video-EEG recording can assist with the correct diagnosis.

Have a look here:

It may prove useful to you. I hope it helps.

thanks im having a look at that website now...

i was just thinking if she has some sort of abnormal brain function it could set off the fits maybe whilst sleeping.......but they are not frequent enough to get diagnosed properly

This morning her mam heard a bang and went up and she had fell out of bed having the fit.....its pretty scary like..

i imagine it would be. is she aware of them? i'm thinking if she is maybe you could get one of those bed rails like you can get for toddlers to save any accidents falling out of bed? if she's not aware of them then it's perhaps not a good idea.

yeah she knows she has them....not when having it obviously...she never rememberes it and is very drowsy etc after it....takes her a while to clear her head and get back to her normal self...

i think i will print off the page of the website 'blas' showed me...and give it to her parents... as it gives advice on mats next to the bed and about pillows etc....

just hoped someone may have heard of it and could tell me........maybe she needs more tests at the hospital

thanks christophersmum

i bought one of those bed rail things when christopher (now almost 8) was a baby. when he needed it at toddler age i couldn't find it but he's always wriggled round in circles than side to side (he's bonkers!.lol) so didn't need it in the end. he's not going to be around for the next few days (first school trip away from home) so I'll have a good root around his room and see if i can find it. if i can you can have it for your friend. wherever it is, it's brand new & I can't think of a more worthwhile use.....if i can find it !

Just out of interest did the hospital do a sleep EEG or one during the day?

Is she stressed at all?

I have a condition called NEAD (Non Epileptic Attack Disorder) which makes me twitch, then have fits (twitches are like a warning sign for me, but now I am controlling the fits and can stop at the twitches.) I have had fits while sleeping in the past. Its common because its when your body lets you relax that the stress actually comes out.

sounds like a plausible theory. I found this on google... http://www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/nonep.html

she doesnt fit in well at school as she is quiet and finds the work difficult....she is very clever, but things like reading and spelling etc is at something like age 8 or even less....but she is amazingly bright and creative....just lacks basic skills........it is quite possible that she is stressed. her mother was diagnosed with lung and liver cancer last summer, and her dog died of prostate cancer in november....with that, school and her (tourettes) i imagine she is very stressed. she doesnt sleep well. watches tv and plays games till very late....and is up early.... im sure everything together is bad for her, but still wouldnt like to assume anything about the fits...
