Temperature in the office

Good Mornin all,

Work have just sen round an e-mail to say they are fitting new air con in the near future and that it may be cold so to bring in coats to where at our desks. God knows why they are doing it in the winter. I was wondering if there is a rule that if it drops below a certain temperature in the work place you are allowed to go home? Tried looking on the net but it didn't really come up with anything. I was wondering if anyone knew if I'm right and what that temperature is?

Cheers

The temperature in workrooms should provide reasonable comfort without the need for special clothing. Where such a temperature is impractical because of hot or cold processes, all reasonable steps should be taken to achieve a temperature which is as close as possible to comfortable. 'Workroom' means a room where people normally work for more than short periods.

The temperature in workrooms should normally be at least 16 degrees Celsius unless much of the work involves severe physical effort in which case the temperature should be at least 13 degrees Celsius. These temperatures may not, however, ensure reasonable comfort, depending on other factors such as air movement and relative humidity.'

The min is 16 if its just an office. If its new air conditioning surely it'll have a hot air function or if not they can just not turn it on?

I think it's implying it may be cold whilst they fit it.

There is a min temperature, but if they've given you fair warning, and it's just while they fit it, I think you'll have to put up or book a day's leave.

Do'h I just thought he was stuck in an office like mine where one person controls the air con and has it set to weird tempratures.

I think I used to work with you! One bloke in our office was ALWAYS roasting, so the a/c was on constantly. The rest of us had to wear scarves and coats until he went for a pee, and we would crank it right up and tell him it had broken.

You must be a woman as blokes I find feel the temperature alot differently to women which is why I have to have a fan on me all day even in the winter whilst the women in the office still complain half the time of being cold!

Yes, I am a woman, and I do feel the cold. But this wasn't just me, and I was the only woman there, in an office full of men (read - old ladies...).

It must be fairly cold, it's disabled their ability to reply!

Obvious solution here. Bring in an electric heater or ask your boss to.

My fingers have froze. Just defrosted them so can type again Lol. It Is while they fit the air con. I'm normally fairly warm in the office anyway. Just looking for a reason to be sent home. Cheers all

My guess is if your boss sees you chattering on here (or anywhere else for that matter) he'll find a reason to send you home!

Quit possibly they will but they've put me on a desk where my monitor faces a window and im on the top floor so the only things that can see my monitor are pigeons bobbing there heads as they rest on the window ledge. Top seat I thought when I got moved there
