Only if you're doing it wrong - not had that problem personally

A better question is why do they get paid the same for 3/5ths of the workload?

I agree.

I like a women who can grunt.
#8
Reminds me of the old joke...

Q. Why did God give women the ability to orgasm?

A. So they could have something else to moan about.
:whistling::?

Seriously, the one player, whose name excapes me, they had on the News this morning sounded like a fox being strangled. Aparently she doesnt make a sound during practice which leads you to beleive it's all a ploy to put off her opponent.
#9
Because they can't win without cheating and putting their opponents off?
#10
They're releasing their inner chi:thumbsup:
#11
It psyches out the opponent, and helps to put in maximum power on the shot
#12
I thought it was a way to put more energy into their strokes. Theres quite a few out there doing it, and if you watched the Sharapova Kutosova match before they are two prime examples.

Although if one player is making such loud goaning into each shot surely it will put off their opponent, all the more reason for them to do it. It has never been stopped before so why now?

Monica Seles was just as bad as the current grunters just shows that its something thats been round for ages.

Too right!

So much for equality - "we want the same pay as the men but there's no way we're playing five sets!"

I prefer them to fake it than say "that ceilings needing painted"

Exactly. And it's only fair that the men get paid the same if they win in 3 sets and I'm sure that's exactly what happens.

EDIT: The sound comes from physically exerting oneself. I've made a few embarrassing noises up the gym when squeezing out a few tough reps. It helps.

The bottom line is that the Men play best of 5 and ladies (term loosely used) play best of 3, regardless how many sets it takes them to win.

Is this going to be a 'men leave the seat up and ladies leave it down' conversation? If so, I'm out.

Would you watch it if they didn't? :)

No. It's going to be a 'It shouldn't be based on how many sets they play, but on the amount of money it generates' conversation.

Anything else is just silly.

Michelle Larcher de Brito is the worst you have ever heard, renowned for doing it to put of the other players and she admits it!!!,

I think the level of grunting in women's tennis is reaching epic proportions, it must be offputting to their opponent surely!

ok - let's talk about money generated.

(bear with me on this)

If the winner of the men's tournament goes through and wins in straight sets, they'd have won 21 sets. (from round 1 to winning the final).

Conversely, if the winner of the ladies wins all games in straight sets, she'd have won 14.

Therefore, she'd have played 7 sets less tennis. Based on the above, the minimum amount of games in the Men's would be 2. (3 sets a game, making 2 games and a set 'left over')

So the winner of the Mens would have played two full games more than the ladies (I'll ignore the surplus set). This is based on minimum amount of sets played each match.

This obviously increases to a maximum of 14 extra sets for the Men's if all sets are played, equating to anything from 4 extra games (based on 3 sets a game, with a ladies game of 2 sets left over) to three extra games (at 5, 5, 4 sets respectively)

I'm sure that someone like Murray or Federer playing an extra two/three/four games is going to generate money.

Remember, that's two/three/four extra games that ONE man (the winner) will play more than the ladies. My head hurts just thinking about this, but imagine how many more games in the entire TOURNAMENT the men will play in total comprared to the ladies! (taking into account of losing players each round etc).

So tell me again that the money should be based on cash generated? You're absolutely right.

Jeez. All that and you missed the point entirely.

Prize money should be awarded, in my opinion, on the money generated through tv rights, merchandising and other marketing streams.

Oh absolutely - let's forget it's a competition which professional sportspeople compete in for probably one of the most coveted grand slams of them all.

/sarcasm off

And to think you have the nerve to say *I* missed the point!!!!!!
