  i am living in koh samui - been here for 7 months.
  
  depends on what you want to do and how much time and money you have and how old you are.
  
  i'd do bangkok and then go up north on a trecking trip for 3 days and then down south to hit the islands - exchange rate really poor right now 48b to the pound - used to be 74b to the pound a few years ago so keep that in mind - still cheaper to live here for me - a bar down the road offers 2 cold beers for £1.20 and free pool.

  Thanks that sounds good, im looking to go for 2/3 weeks, just a short one, budget when I get there about 1k, im 30, going solo the backpacking route, recently single & always wnated to do it so thought why not ! Whens best for the good weather ?

  I got back from Koh Samui just a month ago. It's going to be pretty rainy right now, compared to dryer parts of the year.
  
  I'd avoid the tourist spots, like Chaweng Beach on Koh Samui. They're pretty naff and all the fake gear etc. is just cheap tat now - compared to how it used to be.

  the weather is pretty good actually right now - i have got a great tan!
  
  rainy month is usually November however it did not rain last november people tell me, we are having a bit of a drought at the moment and need 1 month of non-stop rain to get back to how it should be.

  Yeah, take some good quality condoms from uk! have had 2 of the local ones break on me here in 7 months.

  If you only have a couple of weeks, personally i would spend a day or two in Bangkok then head to the islands, specifically Koh Phan ngan, lots of parties, lovely beaches, there is something wrong with you if you cant have a good time there. I would stay on one of the quiter beaches (Haad Yao in the north west is lovely) as Haad Rin is a bit crazy. Koh Tao is lovely as well but quieter. Koh Samui was too touristy for my liking but i guess it all depends on what you want to do..... Anyway, have a good time, i'm not jealous at all!

  bangkok koh samui is more westernised bangkok is the place for backpacking

  Cheers folks, im guessing travelling between places over there is pretty easy and cheap ?
  
  And as far as travelling alone goes I guess its the kinda place you wont be for long ?
