Its pretty common sense not to give them cash....if they're hungery off to buy them a cheap burger, cold - offer to buy them a cuppa. If you don't have the time then give some money to a charity that looks after the homeless.

Give them cash and you're likely to be fuelling some addiction or other.

i always use the old 'sorry got no change' routine, i know you feel bad but remember no one needs to he homeless local authorites, churches and charities run hostels and drop in centres to help but many choose the life style due to other personal problems eg drugs and mental illness

Depends where you live, I worked in a council hostel a few years ago, I regularly had to turn away people who I knew would be going to sleep in the train station/park etc.

I never give homeless people money though.

i wouldnt ever give a homeless person money either, only because i dont know how they are going to spend it, if its on drugs or alcohol then thats a complete waste of my money, can ppl donate to homeless shelters, wouldnt mind doing that, i know my dad alwaysbuys a big issue if they are about, that goes towards helping out homeless ppl i believe.

surviving in london for several years makes you tougher and appreciate every penny you earn. so unless i personally know someone who is in super urgent need and i know will make a difference (i do give away anonymously).

a few years ago i have stopped giving away spare change, they now go into the kitchen jar.

Sadly, most of the people who stayed in the hostels I worked at would spend all their money on drink and drugs. The ones that weren't into that wouldn't be the ones begging for "Spare change".

Yes, you can, there are loads of homeless charities, or you can donate directly to hostels themselves. sometimes not money but tins of food etc. We used donations to make up food parcels when residents secured a tenancy, and were in need of food to tide them over.

Hiya all!

Dunno whats PC and what isnt, but there are people out there who aren't alcho's or druggies! You'd probably find more of those in here, (Me included!!! :whistling:)

Dont agree with BG about punching them in the face, but lets face it, we got a warm bed and home to go to! Lets not be judgemental!

BG, I agree with the sentiment! I'd rather give food/sustinence / help than trust some of them with money! But, it could be any of us one day! God forbid! but its true!

We got a lovely guy selling the Big Issue, set himself up with a London Eve Standard type stand, with a toy dog next to it! Says on the side, please dont feed the dog, He's stuffed!!! and Please form an orderly queue!!!

Sense of humour and a nice bloke too!

:p

the worst excuse I heard from a beggar was:

"me and my friend was robbed on this train and we don't have enough money for the train fare"

and this was on a train, that left the first stop 2 minutes before.
#33
Times are hard BG, don't give your money away then complain about it. You chose to go down that path twice (for some strange reason). Just remember charity begins at home and there is where it should stay. There are places and help out there for the needy and homeless, let them go there for their bus fare in future.

BTW, if you've got money going spare or burning a hole in your pocket, I'll PM you my address :-) xx

true what you say hostels are full (i work in this field) and hundreds of hidden homeless people who drift staying at friends family and having to spend nights in cars and on the street but some people just dont want to change their own lifestyle and choose to be on the streets

I hate people that live on the streets. I am talking proper people that sleep outside not people who live in hostels rent free. In manchester quite often on the way to uni i get a guy on the steps leading down from the train station asking for change. I say yes i have change but not for you. It makes me really angry that decent people with homes and lives get interrogated for change off them and they feel like you should give it to them. Really ****** me off. My spare change is not theirs, just cos it is spare doesn't mean i don't own it.

And you get people that say "oh its not their fault that they have no-one to care for them blah blah blah" but at the end of the day it is their fault. Just PURE lazyness in my eyes. The services are there, go and get them.

Oooh, they felt that one but I do agree about the change bit. Just cos its spare, doesn't mean you should give it away to them
