The £99.00 laptop

A new budget computer aimed at schoolchildren is about to be launched.
Elonex is launching the country's first sub £100 computer later this month and hopes to be making 200,000 of them by the summer. It will be aimed at schoolchildren and teenagers, and looks set to throw the market for budget laptops wide open.

Called the One, it can be used as a traditional notebook computer or, with the screen detached from the keyboard, as a portable; albeit without the planned touchscreen that Elonex had to abandon to hit its £99 price tag. Wi-fi technology lets users access the internet or swap music (and homework) files between computers wirelessly.

Personal files can be stored on the laptop’s 1GB of built-in memory or on a tough digital wristband (1-8GB, from £10) that children can plug into the USB socket of whichever computer they happen to be using, be it the One, a PC at school or their parents’ laptop.

Is that Lucy Beale?

Doesn't seem to be anyway to order any of these? I can't even see them mentioned on the website.

Not really a deal if no product has been released yet.

That sounds like an excellent idea, and ideal to get little kids using one. What with the cost being so low aswell, it would be ideal for families on a low budget.

I dont have kids but I think is great for those that do.

Top deal!

Thanks for heads-up.
Sounds interesting, but you can't actually buy them yet. ......"launches later this month"

Going to keep my eyes open for one of these - my eldest son goes to secondary school in September.

I dont know why this has been marked expired. i know that it is not available as yet, but at least it will help someone with kids to look out for this deal, avoiding investing in a higher priced laptop.

The homepage for this is hilariously cheap looking...

bit of a strange approach, trying to hang the sales pitch on kids needing to use ICT resources when there has been massive investment into all schools over the last few years- they'd be better pitching it at OAPs and for people who want to see what the internet is about but want to spend as little as possible.
