Did anyone watch this? And, more importantly, did anyone notice the censorship of James May smoking a pipe?? Did they really filter out the image of a person smoking a pipe or did I (or should I say, the whole of the country) just go stark raving bloody mad??
I'm speechless. I really am. If they are going to take the p*** with PC BS like this, i'll hand back my TV licence and tell them to shove public service broadcasting where the sun doesn't shine.
Utterly insane, i'm at a loss for words that the UK could ever get in such a sorry state as it is atm.

Didn't notice it, but maybe they did it deliberately and are making a satirical point?

Ahh, I see. So by pixelating the image we ol' morons are not going to realise that they are smoking pipes.
I get it now
Like I said, utterly insane. I think that maybe they would have been better to just re-shoot the scene. To censor it like that just treats the audience as if they were born without a brain.
Last time I looked, it was illegal to kill people. But they don't censor out the kills in movies do they? I guess it must be a whole lot worse in the eyes of the law to light up than to kill someone.

psssst...Don't tell anyone, but I have it on good authority that those people in the movies that get killed, they're not really dead, they're just acting. Mum's the word though, ok?:whistling:

:p

Just kidding. The censoring thing is silly, but then again the Beeb is damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Why was this 'expired' (and for that matter why can a misc thread be expired?)

i saw it and i thought that to begin with it was an overreaction by the BBC, but then the big CENSORED text came up, which made me think it was puposely done by top gear as a point towards the PCness. It was too blantent.

made me think of the South Park ep about family guy though lol

Yeah, it looked like it was done as a two finger salute to PCness gone mad.
Nightswimmer, I take your point. But people do still smoke, believe it or not. And laws do get broken. But that doesn't mean that 'law-breaking' per se should be censored out of TV. That is almost 'V for Vendetta' come true.
Airbrushing over a social problem won't ever eliminate it. It just drives it underground.

I totally agree with you, but I think you are getting angry at the wrong people, and why I say that the Beeb is damned if they do damned if they don't.

What options did they have?

1: Show it in it's original form:
They would get in even more trouble for doing this, than they did originally.

2: Reshoot the scene:
There would be uproar in the press that the Beeb was wasting public money just in order to be PC. Complaints about censorship. And not to mention the fact that knowing the presenters, they would flatly refuse to reshoot the scene.

3: Not show the scene:
There would be lots of complaints about how the Beeb had chosen to censor the scene.

4: Show the scene, but censor it in such a way to make a statement about how ludicrous the whole things is.
I'm guessing they chose to do this option, but it would seem that some people (*cough* :p) still complain about the Beeb and how they are censoring the scene.

Like I say, damned if they do, damned if they don't.
