I started reading the God Delusion when i was 19. And although i'm a staunch atheist, i did have to re-read parts to understand the language dawkings was using. Some of it did go over my head, and i'm planning to re-read it once i'm more 'grown up'. :giggle:

One I started here. You have to be careful not to offend those with 'faith'.

I've read it and at times it is quite accesible, but at other times it is heavy going. One of the key ideas he proposes is that Darwinian natural selection can satisfactorily account for the way the world and its inhabitants are today (as an alternative to the idea that a supreme being created the world).

This idea challenges the cosmological and teleological arguments used for the existence of God. Certainly worth reading imo.

That thread isn't so much to do with the book, more a "discussion" about creationism.

Haven't read The God Delusion but other stuff I've read by Dawkins can be a bit on the "high-brow" side and I personally dislike his style (he is as dogmatic as any of the most fundamentalist preachers I've ever heard, can be quite condescending, and - surprisingly for a scientist - is completely prejudicial about the evidence he presents ... IMHO of course!)

Here's a review of the book that would probably reflect some of my thoughts about Dawkin's writing. Some will completely dismiss it out of hand because it is from a Christian website (though a more irreverant, liberal bunch than most others!). If you're a bit more open-minded you might find it useful.

Shieldsy....that link was a very interesting read:)

a nicely balanced viewpoint.

Not read Dawkins' book yet,my lodger has a copy(none of his book choices are what you call 'light reading!) and says I should give it a go.....maybe I will one day.

As an atheist who is fascinated by religion I just have to get my two pennies worth in. Yes it is a good book but try 'The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster' (see my Avatar) - excellent & v. funny.

If believing in a god keeps you happy that's great - let each person believe what they want! I do have issues when people ram religion down your throat as factual. Why don't they teach humanism in schools? If they can teach about different religions surely they should also teach that there might not be anything - afterall schools are supposed to teach 'facts'. When I mention this to the teachers they view me as some sort of alien.

Also, I have issues with religious people not acting in a 'christian' way! My daughter (soon to be six) was told by a boy at school (who's mother is Polish and father Russian - so I assume (????) they are Catholic) that because I didn't believe in god I was evil. Nice....

I read his selfish gene book a while back. Was heavy going and I mixed it with some nice trash novels so my head never hurt too much. Not sure about this one but his books tend to have alot of biological concepts so not really light reading for any non biologists. Worse by far is Stephen Goulds The panda's thumb :|Totally confused:? Something about how a panda can have a thumb like us?? Hurting my head even thinking about the book now:p

I believe what I believe, and people of 'faith' are welcome to believe what they believe. I don't see a need for Dawkins to rub the faces of believers in it.
Whilst I wouldn't read Dawkins' offering, I do fall in the Darwin camp. I just don't see a reason for pushing a personal religious agenda either way. Books like this just promote bad feeling.

The Selfish Gene is probably better written. Whatever helps you to oppose the insidious influence of religions of all stripes is very welcome. Unfortunately we have mistaken the need for tolerance with 'respect' - something undeserved by any dogma that causes adherents to harm others on the basis of whichever crazed and insanitary primitive whose supposed revelations form the basis of their belief of choice...

Interesting in that it shows that some 'christians' have read his books with an open mind and recieved the science behind the ideas. However it is also disingenous in 'playing up' religion. Just as an example it stated that religion was a driving force behind the abolishing slavery. Ignoring the fact that slavery is written into the new testament as being perfectly allowable and common practice in many religions.
