My first 40gb ps3 got the BD-Rom failure within the first year as did my 2nd console they got replaced by sony within warranty,
No problem's with my current console.

IF it is a A BD-ROM Failure you shouldn't have any problems getting it fixed or replaced.

IF your ps3 develops The YLOD it can be a bit tricky to get it fixed or replaced, As it is difficult to prove how the fault occurs A fellow HUKD Member may post with further information regarding this, From past experience in dealing with this problem.

IF it develops the YLOD within 12 months you are covered by the manufacturers warranty which your console should be either repaired or replaced, you have your statutory rights

Watchdog link http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/2009/09/playstation3_and_the_yellow_li.html

IF your PS3 develops A fault within 6 years you are covered by the sales of good act

Sale of Goods Act 1979. Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982. Sale and Supply of Goods Act 1994. The Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002.
Key Facts:

• Wherever goods are bought they must "conform to contract". This means they must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality (i.e. not inherently faulty at the time of sale).
• Goods are of satisfactory quality if they reach the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking into account the price and any description.
• Aspects of quality include fitness for purpose, freedom from minor defects, appearance and finish, durability and safety.
• It is the seller, not the manufacturer, who is responsible if goods do not conform to contract.
• If goods do not conform to contract at the time of sale, purchasers can request their money back "within a reasonable time". (This is not defined and will depend on circumstances)
• For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).
• A purchaser who is a consumer, i.e. is not buying in the course of a business, can alternatively request a repair or replacement.
• If repair and replacement are not possible or too costly, then the consumer can seek a partial refund, if they have had some benefit from the good, or a full refund if the fault/s have meant they have enjoyed no benefit
• In general, the onus is on all purchasers to prove the goods did not conform to contract (e.g. was inherently faulty) and should have reasonably lasted until this point in time (i.e. perishable goods do not last for six years).
• If a consumer chooses to request a repair or replacement, then for the first six months after purchase it will be for the retailer to prove the goods did conform to contract (e.g. were not inherently faulty)
• After six months and until the end of the six years, it is for the consumer to prove the lack of conformity.

When backing up your game saves ( The Copy protected ones )

You need to do a full back up which take's around 1-2 hour's dependent on how much HDD space you are using

After backing up you ps3 you will NEED to DEACTIVATE that PS3/HDD from PSN as you can only have upto 5 registered PS3s to one account.

To deactivate your ps3,

Deactivate this system by selecting ( system activation ) under ( PSN ) > ( account management)
Must be done before doing a system restore

IF placing your original HDD into a NEW PS3 you do not need to do this ( Activated PS3/HDD info is stored on THAT HDD )

Also when you restore you backed up data
You will notice on the XMB your trophy list does not appear,
Don't panic all you need to do is put the disc in for that game and the trophys list will re-appear again ( trophy info is held on sony servers )

And you will have to re-download your PSN GAME downloads back onto your HDD ( These are non HDD Transferable )

Yes i had this problem with my original uncharted save also, Nothing you can do about it, But start a new game, ( pain tbh )

There is an optional FW update to 3.15 that may fix your problem. ( Im Certain it's the game save )

Can he not borrow a game file @ 52% and install that?

Tell me more.........what does the update do is it specific to this game? Can I back up to USB? On chapter 8 or 9 at the moment. BTW 1st time I put the disc in (after a 12 month break from the game, so last time I played it it was lower firmware and I had no problems) it refused to load, disc is in good condition and I have never had a drive failure, but went to a black screen without the gold spinning thing in bottom right corner, wouldn't eject disc and wouldn't reboot, eventually allowed me back to the XMB and after cleaning the disc it worked. Dodgy disc? (Its not mine I borrowed it).

Very lofty aim btw, can't help thinking that those who don't know about this thread (and even some that do) are not going to follow all of your instructions and terms to the letter. First thing I will be doing if I get YLOD is starting a thread saying "Help I've got YLOD!!!!"

If he is to borrow a game save, I'am uncertain as to weather it would work or not, As Most or all ps3 game data are user locked now due to the trophys feature

Best to back that save up delete it of the HDD and the game install data

Then Reinstall the game data and copy the save game back onto the ps3 HDD

To perform the optional system update Goto the far left on the XMB and you should see system update hit x then select Update via internet

If it says you there is no need to update it means you are already running 3.15FW

If none of those work you will prob have to start a new game.

( As i said in one post i had this exact problem and save wouldnt work still showed on my save data though, ps3 didnt read the save )

R* have hinted il edit this post with email i got

Rockstar has a lot to talk about these days, and that includes the upcoming Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire and downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV.
The latter two topics are of special interest to PlayStation 3 owners, primarily because L.A. Noire was initially announced as a PS3 exclusive (but has since gone multiplatform, as far as we know) and the recent DLC for GTAIV has been restricted to the Xbox 360 and PC. Therefore, it's not surprising to see both topics pop up over at Rockstar's official blog, where several important questions finally received answers. For instance, when asked why The Ballad of Gay Tony wasn't released for the PS3, the reply was as follows:

"We know that it continues to be an often-asked question – and believe us, we understand the frustration of PS3 owners like yourself who haven’t been able to play any of our most recent releases. All we can say is that we at Rockstar promise to be very good to you with our releases in 2010. Please stay with us and stay tuned!"

While we know Rockstar's Agent is a PS3 exclusive, it seems L.A. Noire will be available on the 360 and PC, but we still haven't heard much about this mysterious title. The latest report was that development was going very well and that we should expect something very special, but how's about an update? In reply, Rockstar said:
"There will be something great to see soon – a proper in-depth look at the game and why it is so ground breaking and innovative, both in terms of the game’s design and the amazing new technology to support it. Expect to see a long-awaited reveal via a big cover story next month."
Well, that's good to know. How long have we been waiting on L.A. Noire now? A few years, at least. And prior to this, we had heard a rumor that all available downloadable content for GTAIV would eventually find its way to the PS3, so perhaps that will be verified next month as well. We'll definitely let you know one way or the other.

Iv heard/ seen threads on here in the past regarding the 60GB PS3 doing this thing,

Also a few members have said in the past that sont repaired them for £80-£120 cant quite remember the price, That was for a whole new BD-ROM drive

The 40GB can be temperamental with the BD-ROM

The 80gb are the best allrounder for reliability from what i have read.

Not heard much on the new slim models failing, I am still curious about the ventilation on them though.

Had the YLOD in early December on 60GB PS3. After a month (xmas, new year and snow all delayed it) and armed with the Sales of Goods Act i finally got GAME.co.uk to send it off to be fixed for free to Total Console Repair. Was picked up on wednesday, and i should hopefully get it back this week. Unfortunately i've been reading up on this company and i'm not holding my breath! we'll soon see.

i'm so desperate to play it though! really missing it! god thats sad...

After backing up you ps3 you will NEED to DEACTIVATE that PS3/HDD from PSN

How do I deactivate this?

Also when put you backed up data back onto your new HDD or PS3 You will notice on the XMB your trophy list does not appear, Don't panic all you need to do is put the disc in and and the trophy list will re-appear again

Do you mean, I just put any game in and the trophy list will re-appear?

yup. had so many problems with game. when i get it back (and if its working) then i'll be keeping an eye out for a good deal on a slim and will trade it in i think. anything sub £200 and i'd probably snap it up if i could get a decent trade-in price. or i could wait for it to break again and try to claim money from game. they usually only give you enough to buy a second hand console, but i dont want to buy a second hand 60gb as it will prob break pretty quickly so i'll probably try and get as much money as possible and get a new one if i cant get a decent trade in price for it.

What i would do if my ps3 broke is buy a pre-owned console from game and buy 2years warranty and keep extending it , that is what i would do.

that way i know they have to either fix it or replace , better piece of mind in the long run

I got hte dreaded YLOD last weekend - gutted! I have a PS3 60gb and have had it for about 3 years now.

Unfortunately, I purchased from Woolworths so haven't got a chance of using the SOGA.

I am getting desperate, so am thinking of giving it the 'hairdryer' treatment, getting my game out, and then trading it in at Game!
