Sounds like a challenge?

We've already done that one today

I wonder if a trend has started at the BBC! I have not heard the Clarkson news yet, but no doubt it will brew over the next few days until someone else puts their foot in it too. Hopefully all of this will sort the trash out in the media rather than simply being a witch hunt.
#4
Clarkson only had one insult, well unless brown isn't scottish or does have 2 eyes and to be honest even the idiot part could be argued as fact if you think of the gold sell off or the botched election that never was.

So on that basis I'd personally rule out Clarkson and put forward Christian Bale.

oh dear.. lol

How come so many of these "hey he/she insulted me/my pet hamster /my favourite potted aspidistra" all come crawling out of the woodwork all in one go?

It's just copy-cat-ism.

Who the hell cares what Jeremy Clarkson thinks of Gordon Brown?
#6
So it's all about what Clarkson has said about Gordon Brown. Is it possible to insult a politician?

Only by calling him honest.
#8
how can that be an insult? it was perfectly descriptive. he can only see from one eye, he is scottish and he's definitely an idiot. QED he's a one-eyed scottish idiot.
#9
everyone insults everyone - its a fact of life.
#10
i think if the bbc got rid of clarkson, the uk would kick up big time lol.

this country is pathetic, you cant say anything any more, and i think its an insult to our human rights. how can thatcher be done for speaking in private?

Britain once was Great, it isnt any more.

BBC
Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson has said he is sorry for calling Gordon Brown a "one-eyed Scottish idiot".

That is not right! I don't particulary like Gordan Brown's politics, but no-one ought to insult someome for pysical deformities. Such mocking is childish, idiotic and wicked. Thankfully Charkson has apologised, but he should never have said this. I was taught that we should never mock the afflicted, especially since one day we might find ourselves in a worse condition.
#13
How many people believe that Clarkson actually WAS sorry when he said "Sorry"?:whistling:

brown can only see from one eye... thats genuinely news to me, the other 2 parts of the statement i knew.
so well done clarkson

Who says it was intended to mock? Its a fact that he is one eyed in the same way he is Scottish? How come its only the factor of saying "one eyed" the press are picking up on? Surely there are more Scottish people to be "offended" than there are one eyed?

Calling him an idiot was bang out of order though, a real insult to the real intellectually challenged to be compared with that *&^&^% *****?
#17
What would you call someone who sold our gold reserves at half price, who played a very large part in ruining the pension plans of half the country and who gave pensioners an annual inflation award of 75 pence? 'Idiot' for someone like that almost seems to be a compliment.
#18
Interesting takes from y'all, but the three words were clearly packaged as a single insult, so "one-eyed" and "Scottish" were both intended as insults and show the speaker's prejudices. If I call someone an idiot it is an attack. If I call them a "Scottish idiot" it might be that the "Scottish" is being used as a simple descriptive of the attacking word "idiot" (but probably not). But if I package three words together I have clearly done so for effect, and it is also clear that each of them is intended as an insult. If I were one-eyed or Scottish I would be rightly insulted by his use of these terms. If I were an idiot I wouldn't understand the insult so would probably not be too bothered.

I agree. I wasn't 'taught' this but somehow absorbed it. It's out of order to insult anyone personally like this. Some ^^^ might say - yes he is Scottish but the intention is clear - to be denigrating. Someone might say about me: 'She's Welsh' but it's the context that tells you the meaning.

I have to disagree on all points I'm afraid. He's a really clever guy doing an almost impossible job to the best of his ability and wanting to do so in public service for so much less than he would get in financial reward and social repayment as for instance a city banker ( might have done a typo on banker).

Clarkson does hyperbole for laughs: I wasn't laughing at this personal attack.

The foxy lady speaks it as it is. ;-)

Idiots. There are few around, but Gordon Brown isn't one of them. :)

Earlier in the thread someone mentioned Clarkson insulted the Australians yet he's over there now and this case you believe he was insulting scottish people. However I don't think he's really singling anyone out with his insults in that I think he's insulted just about everyone out there some way or another. I should feel insulted in triple as I'm Scottish, I drive a diesel powered car (by choice) and a motorbike which are all despited and mocked by Clarkson. I can't say I'm the slightest bit bothered although at the same time I'm considerably unimpressed by the way my fellow countryman has been running the country.

Yes, I'm not particularly impressed with all of Gordon Brown's decisions either John, but I wouldn't call him a one-eyed Scottish idiot - in private or on the airwaves. It's true that I might not feel especially insulted if I were Scottish, and maybe not if I were partially-sighted. But if I were Gordon Brown, I would certainly be feeling the force of the insult right now.
#25
From Gordon Brown's point of view, I admire the fact that after all the abuse he takes over his time as leader, from citizens to celebs to etc. he is still able to walk up to the House of Commons and still able to fight (verbally) the Conservatives.
I would think that Gordon Brown would shrug this remark from JC off his shoulders as this would be the least of his worries.

they shud stick him in the reasonably priced car..........theyl have a great convo me thinks.

I doubt Gordon Brown could care less, as a politician he has to have a thick skin and of all people Jeremy Clarkson has little credibility for criticising Brown.

i'm sorry but that's rubbish. its commonly acknowledged amongst pundits that brown is the most ineffective "common's fighter" that the labour party has ever had. he cannot stand up to either the conservative or liberal democrat leaders in debate. he used the same comeback ( the do nothing party) so many times it no longer even hits home. the only thing he ever had going for him was his economic record, and thats now in tatters. he's still there as leader because no-one else in his party wants to fight the next election knowing they have no chance of winning. he's there to fail so that someone else can take over and rebuild. he's a politician, he's insulted by comedians every single day. clarkson is a comedian these days. if jonathan ross called him a "one-eyed scottish idiot" then it would be for laughs but because its clarkson its an insult.

Yes, there's probably some truth in this. But JC is also a political animal (see his newspaper columns) so was probably killing two birds. But even if it was purely for career-enhancing 'press', it doesn't make it any less crude and offensive.

As a Scot - I don't see anything wrong in what clarkson said - its just Clarkson being an idiot, His previous "lorry drivers are all murderers" gaff was far worse. Gordon Brown, Buffoon Johnson etc have all chosen to be in the public eye so I'm afraid they are fair game.

Spitting image used to do far worse to politicians.......now that was funny...

Yeah, I forgot about Spitting Image - and I must admit it was funny. :)

Maybe I'm over-sensitive to Clarkson bringing disability into it...? But to be fair, once I suggested guv might have a learning disorder, which might also be interpreted as offensive, although my interest then (and now) is understanding his aggressive behaviour rather than attacking him per se (and if I'm honest, I'm also defending myself from his attacks).

My problem is that I always get hung up on the rights and wrongs of a thing and then drag it out until I can understand it. I hold things up for criticism, perhaps unfairly sometimes and perhaps too often or with too much harshness.

Maybe I judge Clarkson too harshly, but something in me tells me what he is doing is simply wrong, that it's morally and ethically suspect. I can't quite put my finger on what it is I find so worrying about that though, shown I think in my wavering attitudes to humour.

Yours,

Confused :-(

As a Scottish pirate of African desent its been a bad week for me. Damn you Thatcher and Clarkson.
#38
Ok, well I should ask it straight then guv, since at least I know you won't be offended. Have you ever been diagnosed with a learning disorder, or do you suspect you might have one? If you have it might explain some of the misinterpretations of you seem to make of some of the things I have said. If you answer negative to both, I'll take you at your word and can at least rule that explanation out.
#39
I "attacked" a dyslexic guy yesterday?! Firstly, I did no such thing, I replied to someone's post to the effect that I couldn't understand what s/he wrote and gave some advice about how to rewrite the ideas. S/he then replied and explained that s/he had dyslexia.

Now would you like to ask that member whether they think I attacked them before you throw your accusations around willy-nilly as always? If you don't I will. How dare you call that an attack. And shame on you for tring to turn it into such a thing. You insult both me and that member by doing so. At least now I know your intent IS malicious rather than a diagnosed disorder.
