Liverpool Football Club tonight issued the following press statement:

The Board of Directors have received two excellent financial offers to buy the Club that would repay all its long-term debt. A Board meeting was called today to review these bids and approve a sale. Shortly prior to the meeting, the owners - Tom Hicks and George Gillett - sought to remove Managing Director Christian Purslow and Commercial Director Ian Ayre from the Board, seeking to replace them with Mack Hicks and Lori Kay McCutcheon.

This matter is now subject to legal review and a further announcement will be made in due course.

Meanwhile Martin Broughton, Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre continue to explore every possible route to achieving a sale of the Club at the earliest opportunity.

So on the evening that it finally looks like there's some more offers on the table, Hicks and Gillett decide to try and remove two of the three man board, replacing them with a family member and a friend............

The 9-point deduction looks like it'll be the only way to go now - at least we can get the club back to being run the proper way.

That doesn't look good does it. I fear another Leeds and Newcastle on the cards for Liverpool.

How long before the same happens to man Utd?

I'm certain it won't go that far. Absolute worse case is we take a 9-point hit when the bank call in the loan. The club won't be short of buyers then.

Will they accept Rupert Murdoch's money

A 9 point hit could see you relegated, seriously.

Liverpool aren’t even relevant anymore when gerrard and torres leave at the end of the season liverpool will become a decent mid-table team.

It could, but I honestly believe we wouldn't be. In a strange kind of way, it would give the club a massive boost as it would mean we'd finally see the back of H&G.

Given the records of the recent overseas investors attracted to premiership clubs I'd be fearful of anyone taking over my club at the moment. To be honest although not helping the situation they are in no way responsible for your current position IMO.

How did we jump from Two bids to 9 point deduction?

Two bids, of which 3 of the 5 man board will accept one. H&G know this, so have tried to replace those three (Broughton is untouchable though, as he's employed by RBS and not H&G) with their own people, giving them the casting vote again. Broughton, Ayre and Purslow are the one's who have made the above statement, making public the underhand tactics the Americans are trying. If they got their way, they'd keep the club for now, until RBS call in the loan and send us into adminstration (and to -3 points in the league)

After thinking about this a bit more I reckon it's one final attempt by H&G to prevent the inevitable. The statement shows that the three 'good guys' are fighting this out, and are doing all they can to push through the sale.

If your debt is being calling in, then you are insolvent.

But if the clubs sold before that time then this doesn't come into play or I missed something? Not being funny but Gregs commets are always doom and gloom. Something I thought was normality.

If it's sold before then you're right. But H&G are digging their heels in as they'd be making no money from either of those two offers. If they wait too long for a stupid offer, RBS will come knocking for their money.

As for Greg, I'm sure he's a Villa fan - say no more :D

The sale is being blocked... Hicks is trying to remove 2 directors. The remaining director is with RBS who own the debt. If they play hardball.... then that option will come into play as its effectively untenable.

I think I will stay positive for now.

Adam, I think you need to read the thread properly. I never started the 9 point reduction comment MC did and if you become insolvent (which MC maybe wants to happen) then thats what will happen. I am not doom and gloom about Liverpool i am a realist. There are many Liverpool fans still living off their success of 20+ years ago and think that they have a great club, great fans and are one of the biggest clubs in the world. They are not and thats a fact. As for the new take over it could be out of the fire into the frying pan as the owner of the Red Sox doesn't have a great wealth which these days is the only way you are ever going to be back in the top 4.
