The right time to put up your Christmas decorations?

Hi Peeps,

With me out of the country, the wife is itching to get my home, not to give me sweet lovin', or becasue she misses me dearly, but becasue she wants to get the Christmas decorations up!

I was wondering when everyone puts their Xmas decs up?

I know the 12th day rule for getting them down, but I'm not aware of a RIGHT time to put them up?

I know in the North East they seem to be going up earlier and earlier.

Last year I saw a flat in a not too prestigious area that had Christams decorations up in September! My theory was that the gadge living in there was going to get sent down and his missus had decided to have Christmas early. Hehe.

I think old traditions used to be on Christmas eve, so the kids wake up to them Christmas day and there begins the twelve days of christmas (deccies).

Now, everyone pushes it by different amounts, and no matter how long you decide to wait, there'll always be a "tut" from someone who has waited even longer! So don't worry about it.

I suppose 1st of December (advent) is a popular early day for it.

My OH has just put ours up yesterday!!! This, I think IS too early, I asked her to at least wait untill December!!! Much "tutt"ing is on the way from my Mum I predict.

I reckon 2 weeks before xmas at the earliest is about right. All the xmas crap starts far too early everywhere else (this year's records for me were seeing 2007 calendars in July and xmas cards on sale over the August Bank Holiday) so the one place to escape xmas is at home!

We always do ours on the first weekend of December. So this Saturday ours will be going up!!

I leave it until a week before..and they come down on 2 january prompt....call me a misery guts but its not my favourite time of the year ..for a very good reason.

I wouldnt say i dont like xmas, but people do start too early, i put mine up at the start of decemeber.

Ours go up on the first weekend in December. This year they're coming down on the 22nd December as we go to the mother-in-law's in Ireland for christmas / new year and when we got back last year the whole house was drowned in pine needles...

Well I'll nod in agreement to all of the above. I suspect they'll be up at my dad's house next week though as my kid brother and step sister will be badgering them to put them up.

I suspect my housemates aren't the Xmassy type so we might manage to avoid the hassle altogether :) Oh alright, maybe some tinsel in the living room and round the extractor fan :pirate:

Well Christmas is supposed to be a christian event (not that I'm that way inclined) and it has become a great big commercial money making exercise...and very tacky......more family quarrels that result in divorce than at any other time of the year..speaks for itself!
#12
I used to agree with the above, untill I started my own family. For the last 4 christmas' it has been a true joy.

I love Christmas - it still seems like a magical time of the year (& i'm coming upto 25 !!).

I'd have them up in September if the misses would let me lol !

I still can't put my tree up as my fruit machine is in the way. Someone buy it off me so I can start annoying the misses with decorations

You couldn't just dress the fruit machine up instead of getting a tree?
It would look ace with the presents littered around it on Christmas Day

Tell the misses that.............lol

Our son's birthday is on the 20th, so our Chrtistmas decorations always go up on 21st.
#17
i always thought it was supposed to be 12 days before that they go up and then 12 days after they go down. but i never do this as the misses starts getting giddy in november so they will be going up this weekend.

We put ours up 1st December, the kids love them to be up as long as possible, we dont go ott (unlike some of our neighbours :giggle: )

i have had mine sat in a corner for the last two weeks and i've been itching to put them up, though i've resisted as i've thought it too early... i plan to do mine this weekend though.., i would do them friday, but we are out for the evening and my brother is baby sitting...

1st weekend is probs best idea... seems a shame to put em all up much later as ya dont get to enjoy em... but before december is ott imho.

We have twins whose birthdays are on 14th Dec, so we stick our stuff up then so they can have some fun on their day (ps - they're 23 this year :)). Our eldest son's birthday is 21 Dec - something about the mad March hare ?

1st of december for me, cause I love xmas. I love getting out my balls and giving them a right good polishing first, and I enjoy sitting there watching them dangle. The trees nice too :)
