So the american government is advising its citizens to stop going to the cinema, pop concerts or anywhere where people are in close proximity to each other in confined spaces. How do we know this? because they just had a press conference in a tiny room in the white house packed to the walls with journalists and cameramen(rolls eyes)

And the mexican governments advice? "stay at least 6 feet away from other people" given the population of mexico this may prove slightly tricky methinks.

Is this another case of the press desperate for the ultimate panic story? you could almost detect the glee when the bbc discovered 3 cases in the united kingdom.

Remember when bird flu was gonna wipe out the entire world? Im not suggesting its not a risk and 81 have died in mexico but maybe the press should stick to facts instead of computer graphics predicting the spread and the number of deaths if "this happens" or "that happens" and wheeling out endless experts talking about how similar it is to the millions who died in 1918.

Call me a cynic, but I suspect the british and american governments may see this as a way of diverting headlines away from the more uncomfortable truths they have to address.

Just seen that a "Pandemic" is a "loose" term. Sounds good for selling papers though.

err-note the quotation marks.-referring to the press panicmongering-not suggesting it is a real pandemic.

'worldwide' would be the redundant part rather than pandemic methinks.

In the birdflu outbreak in north wales, 6 officers who were on point duty near the affected farms had flu like symptoms. 3 of which attended at hospitals and were given tamiflu tablets. At least one of the officers still suffers from extended periods of having a dry mouth and is unable to look at the sun without sneezing 7 times - weird!

I think that is perfectly normal behaviour.

Pandemic is the correct term and it is also OK to reinforce with world-wide, as opposed to most of the world but yes, Shengis is correct the superfluous description is 'world-wide'.

It seems that the particular strain of this swine flu that has travelled to the US is very infectious but not very virulent. If we're going to have a pandemic, I would vote for this one rather than any sort of bird flu which is much more likely to be similar to the WW1 flu pandemic.

What a bizarre commment, it's actually a very effective anti viral. :?

Yup, I wouldnt be suprised if a % of these tablets given out were dud and did nothing or just helped the flu. Weve been here before!

Oh I get you now, a conspiracy theory, the virus was released for population control and some stock of the main 2 antivirals are duds in an attempt to finish us off. OK.

I don't think population control would be the main concern. The far right in the US could use such an issue to force the issue of closed borders. You also have the focus taken off of the economy which could help the current administration.
#28
Yah, the gorvenment are always using peoples lives to create reasons for there plans to be put into action.
