My goodness me, chrysha, these have surpassed my every expectation. I have thought long and hard about visiting China and with the human rights situation and the political implications have just left it. Mind you I did that with Russia and missed the window of opportunity.
Your photos are so evocative and capture all the wonder of the Chinese civilisation that I have thought about for many a long year. I see the Great Wall and I know that actually it is in disrepair for great stretches. I see an ancient civilisation of scientific thought and a still relevant philosophical lineage. I see the beauty of the landscape, the dichotemy of the shoes/women's foot binding and the terracotta warriors/serfdom. I absolutely love the pictures of the people in the park with the traditional hats - I cry a little at that.
The panda statues remind me that it is China, not zoos in the 'west', who are actually saving the Panda by capture breeding programmes - it would be easier if pandas were some of the guys here on HUKD ( just a ref here to how hopeless pandas are at reproducing - well I am a biologist).
Your 'One World' photo with the guy in uniform just shows how one photo can capture thought.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you sharing your photographic experiences. It is so nice of you and so educational for me. I will look many times more at your super-duper photos and think more about them. For now - thank you. How wonderful that your flower photo was so still, so calm - even if it isn't a lotus flower ( I'm not sure!) it should be. I am over-whelmed.
I'll stop now!!

Thanks Chesso, I'm really glad you liked them. I thought long and hard before going because of the human rights issue, finally decided to go because it seemed to me there was more likely to be human right abuses if no one visits and the vast majority of Chinese people I spoke to wanted people to come. People kept asking to have their photos taken with me, they wanted to meet people from outside of China, we were even interviewed for Chinese television!
They are lotus flowers - I saw millions, lots of the lakes were full of them - I'm a bit of a flower freak so have about 100 photos of them.
We saw pandas (in the zoo) but only one photo showing its butt!
I can't wait to go back, but not in August next time, it really was very, very hot.

I love the power, sharp lines and signs of hope in communist art... I went to a statue park in budapest full of statue like this. I'll add this to my scap book for inspiration as I am planning a large piece which will be a mix of comunist/propoganda art with a modern pop art twist... maybe even including current figures in the public eye... (no prizes if I choose obama!)

This picture is amazing

Hi imranmaz, I took loads of pictures of writing on bamboo - but really I suppose it's just graffiti - it just looks cool because it's Chinese writing!

Excellent.
I think that millipede is actually tiny and you've done a great macro shot!! :p On the other hand, I suppose it might just be a huge poisonous centipede.:w00t:
I loved every single one. What a treat. Thanks so much:-D:-D

I wasn't sure what it was but there were loads on the wall ( didn't see them anywhere else). No macro magic, they were up to six inches long!
