Fire alarm or 2,possibly the local fire brigade may install some for free aswell as free alarms they do run these freebies so worth calling up.
If there a gas supply then its best to have a carbon monoxide detector too.Gas rises so you need it placed fairly high up.
Candles come in handy incase elec is off.
I'm sure I'll think of something else but a lot of essentials as been mentioned above.

House insurance, and dont skimp on it....when stuff like the recent floods this summer happen, you really appreciate it. Make sure you get legal cover, this will come in handy if you lose your job (take your company to tribunal)

The only 3 things that are totally necessary are a bed, a beer fridge and a TV with Sky Sports. Apparently.:whistling:

even though the room is a bit wiffy with the smell from the kitchen floor and the living room carpet crunches underfoot, you sit down to watch your tv only to find that the mice all the crumbs have attracted have chewed through the cables of your telly.

Your console has overheated due to all the dust blocking the ventilation vents, you don't have any clean glasses for your beer and you've run out of beer anyway as the glass door of the mini fridge was so dirty you didn't see the beer had run out....

Still at least you have your massage chair but this is the nearest thing to a woman you're ever likely to see with your house in that state.
