Think I have broken my ethernet slot on laptop

Was wanting to ftp between laptop and desktop so attached an ethernet cable, couldnt get it to work after loads of attempts so gave up but forgot the cable was under my foot and tripped up yanking cable out.

The pins are all bent on it but I bent them back into place but when trying to attach an ethernet cable it shows up as cable unplugged.

Not sure if it is broken or its just my cable.

Its under 6 months old and with extra 3 years insurance so it can be repaired, just dont want to be without it for a while since its uni assignment time.

Cheers for that, I will give it another attempt sometime, I am currently in uni pc room so hard to test other cables so brought my own so not sure if its the cable.

if you mean the pins in the socket then it might be knackered as they arent the most robust and as I'm sure you can see they are very specifically aligned

Yeah its the pins that are bent but I have bent them back into place they arent 100% straight but in correct holes and not touching other ones.

Hi. try again if both lights are on between pcs thats good but go inti network settings and turn on network sharing on the lan port. this makes the lappy give the other a connection. also make sure both are in the same domain on system info. the look in network on exploror screen and you should see the other folders you've shared

out of interest did you use a normal ethernet cable (Which would not work) or a crossover ethernet cable which is what you need for plugging in a PC to a PC (or laptop to laptop etc) without a hub or router inbetween them?

I tried the cable that came with my router and plugged it between the 2 pcs.

That is just a network cable (Ethernet) and would not work, to use that cable you would need to plug it in like this

PC -> Network Cable -> Router -> Network Cable -> PC

To do PC to PC you need this

PC -> Crossover Network Cable -> PC

The 2 cables look exactly the same but a crossover cable has 2 wires inside the cable wired up a slightly different way to enable direct PC 2 PC connection

Well that would never work anyway, you need a crossover cable.

but the cable connection should still be recognised - even though it wont be able to pass data
