Thinking of selling in the FS/FT forum, tips please :)

I am considering selling a few things that I would have normally put on ebay in the FS/FT forum instead. I have never bought or sold anything there. I have noticed that people seem to prefer PPG as the payment of choice, despite it offering no buyer protection - why not normal Paypal?. Is there a reason for that? Is it acceptable to request cheques as payment, or is that just not cricket. Any/all advice/tips gratefully received.

People don't use normal paypal because of the charges, there aren't any charges with paypal gift but like you say there is no protection. The theory is if the buyer/seller has quite a bit of positive feedback then you are likely to be safe but of course there are always exceptions to the rules!

You could accept cheque as payment but you might get limited people interested as they would have to wait for the cheque to clear before you sent the item so it could take a while. You could also accept bank transfer as this can be very quick. But again both of these are like paying by paypal gift (no buyer protection)

Hope that helps a little bit :)

It does, thanks. Is bank transfer safe? I would imagine I have to give out all my details... I've only transferred money to or from family this way before!

Also when you start of selling people will probably ask if you will post first and they will pay once they've received the item. This is just because you'll have no feedback so they have no idea whether to trust you or not (not saying you're untrustworthy lol!) A lot of people do this if the buyer has quite a bit of feedback as it should show that they can be trusted

I would be happy to post first, am just trying to find easier/cheaper ways of selling than on ebay. The fees just keep going up! Otherwise it'll all be put back in the loft until summer when we can do a big carboot!

Yep its safe you just give out your name, bank name, sort code and account number. They can only put money in not take it out :) I was worried at first too but have done it lots now

OK, thanks. Will give it a go! Now, to find some scales and packaging...

Yeah can sometimes work out better selling something a little cheaper on here than you'd sell it for on ebay because you don't have any fees to pay on here

No problem :) glad I could help

I don't offer Paypal Normal as it offers the seller no protection what so ever on here. Paypal Gift is no different from using BT as it leaves the money in the sellers domain. It happens to much on ebay and have seen it happen on here items being claimed to be worse then they are, and asking for a refund. If they refund doesn't come they claim the funds back. Obviously I am not nieve to think this doesn't happen the other way because it does. But let's face it trust is a big issue with lower feedback users, especially when starting out.

If you are going to sell items here, be very specific and be as open as you can, also be willing to keep an open mind towards posting first as many sellers starting out here seem to sell pricey items and posting to trust worthy members will boast your additionals sales.

I would post pictures and feedback else where to also help. Make sure you read the rules over and question a mod regarding any issues you might have.

If you think about it all your bank details (except of course passwords etc) are all on any cheque we send so people have been giving out account numbers etc for years.

I shall be super specific, and am happy to post before receiving funds, if it helps get me started. I will sell the lower priced stuff first, where I'm only looking for a pound or so... and hopefully slowly build up some feedback before I try to shift the bigger stuff, which will cost me more in postage than anything else!

In regards to this it's good practice but always double check them.

http://www.192.com isn't always correct for instance. But it's a good start, I ain't registered as a voter so won't list me at my current address but I would still check the details but don't throw accusations about. Though if you have any problems report the thread in question and inform the mods of your doubt they maybe able to help.

Also stock up on carpet cleaner, strong detergent and a good quality washing powder.

This will be needed as if you commit a serious rule breach ASB will place a horses head at the foot of your bed as a warning against further indiscretions.

Don't bother.

I stopped using it when they decided to put fo.lk growth above HUKD usability.
