What is the best to use for thinning down varnish, white spirits, real turps or meths? I have all three. I did this years ago, but cannot remember which one to use. I want to make a thin solution for a final coat.

These days it's probably water  Wouldn't use meths as it evaporates too quickly so could ruin the finish.

I am using an oil based varnish.

Well you should be ok with turps or WS then. I use WS for everything paintwise but reserve meths for degreasing brakes etc.

Thanks. I'll probably try the turps since oil painters seems to use it for thinning their paints.
