Those magazines which come with parts for building models

Just saw that new one today with the 2008 Mclaren F1 car. The price of a magazine is £7.99 (barring the first issue of course), then in the corner it said 84 issues or something like that. So if you wanted to complete the model it would cost you about £671.16. Do people actually buy these stupid things? Also, do the magazine makers actually come out with all 84 issues or do they just stop after say 20? Even if they did issue only 20 of the 84 copies they would still make a hell of a lot of money.

cant understand why anyone buys them tbh-theres a james bond car one too-the fully built car weighs about ten pounds or summat! its extortionate!

Is the quality even as good as those from proper model shops?

At least they tell you "upfront" how many parts there are - they never used to... and lots of people would be conned into buying a mag for a couple of years when maybe they thought they'd have all the bits after 12 months....

people buy them as a hobbie to build the car but also for a read too. If you can afford it and its of intrest to you buy it and build the car bit by bit, if not then wait till 84 weeks have gone by and buy it from ebay

But its such a rip off. I think it would be cheaper to buy models from a dedicated model store and in addition, books related to the model from a book store.

i used to get them as a kid. remember one called Discovery then got into an airplane on called Take Off. neither of them offer a thing that you built, but more educational stuff. think they went for around 20-30 parts & in the later 80's/early 90's they were around £3 an issue.

You will be lucky to find them in the stores after 6 months. Essentially the business model is that they launch a bunch of magazines - first issue heavily discounted - and in that mag advertise subscriptions typically discounted at half price. If they get sufficient subs they print enough magazines to cover it and if not they fold the whole thing and refund subbers.

Basically newsagents will have a few issues then you either have to order other issues at the newsagents or you can order them direct from the place that churns these things out.
But yeah they are a rip off, im sure you could get the models elsewhere for far cheaper.

I get the monthly one that enables you to build your own house, you get 1 brick with each issue

Issue 1 would have a print run of about 60,000
Issue 5 would have a print run of about 30,000
Issue 10 would have a print run of about 15,000
Issue 20 would have a print run of about 6,000
Then it usually stops being produced....

I agree, but how many people smoke and get nothing in return. (apart from cancer and a small buzz)
