not upgrading to HD

Ah I see. Doesn't affect me as I only ever watch HD channels myself. Kids shows look ok on CN mind.

those links r about 2 months old, not sure if its relavant with the new hd boxes out at the mo, altho it maybe help to some people
#6
saxo when you rung sky up what did they tell you about known issues with the hd box? are you returning the box for a new one?
#7
I replaced my thomson (which had a power supply problem) with my father in laws new amstrad and I could not believe the difference in picture quality, the amstrad's sd picture was atrocious it seems to try to upscale the picture too much, making it look very grainy and jaggy, so I opted to replace the capacitors on my thomson power supply and fit a 1tb hard drive, works lovely now and loads of space for all those hd series links

no m8, I bought the box on fleabay more than 2 years ago, so got a bloke on the bay of e to do the capacitors (£19 inc p&p) I performed the hdd swap (very simple) myself, the power supply problem is common on the thomson boxes
oooops sorry edited my previous post, was a thomson box not pace

I have the new 500gb Amstrad box, when I called Sky up Amy told me that
there has been a few calls regarding the rubbish SD picture.
All she said was that technical know about the problem and are looking into it.

Can we get people that are expecting an install to check the SD picture before the engineer leaves and see what they have to say?
#13
Some peole are getting bad sd pictures on the main tv, my mum and dad have a second tv in the back room
I fitted the HD box and the picture on the RF out 1 was so bad they reverted back to the Sky+ box

if this isn't fixed that's a waste of £30 :(
#14
Odd, I recently thought that my SD picture had degraded since we installed the HD box. I mean that when we first installed Sky HD both HD AND SD were clear (HD Obviously better) but just the other day I though the SD looked 'blocky/pixelated'

Although we have HD box I no longer have an HD subscription as I'm peeved at all 'brand new customers only' deals that SKy do. Time to start churning from Sky to Virgin to Freesat etc :-D
#15
Same here sick of getting no deals

and We are on our 3rd HD box, first one was crap and blew up, second one the picture was rubbish and the signel kept going even tho the dish and lmb had been replaced only 2months before.
new box is ok but it's only 2 weeks old, the sound is rubbish tho it used to be on volume 21 its now on 34 to be able to hear it!
#16
There has to be a way of sorting this, they must have used the same components in the box to the Sly+ box

mum and dads picture though the back room (linked throught to the front main room) is amazing with the Sky+ box
#17
Please leave this thread just for SD quality info not deals, the main deal thread is situated in the deals section

thanks guys :)

Very true, the sound quality was far better on the old analogue system.

There's just nowhere in the new menu to alter sound output like in previous models eg the 160gb sky+ box this hd box replaced had the options (not for optical out db though)

Cheeky bards at sky tech department pretended phone line went dead when they did not have a clue what I was on about when I asked where it was in menu and why had it been removed. You need TV on nearly 50 for sound to be at anywhere near where you would say it was loud. Then when you go back to another non sky source it nearly blows ya fn ears off.

So it's clear I am talking about stereo output via HDMI to TV/ scart will be same as will a composite connection when red/white RCA is used for audio input to TV.

Also stereo rca connection analogue to amp/decoder or stereo via optical to amp decoder or stereo via coaxial digital out to amp/decoder

I had a superb Pace Analogue Sky Receiver well over 10 years ago that had Dolby Sound built in, far better than the rubbish Sky palm off on people these days.

Just try and compare the channels from what they used to look like to what they are now. If you have your sky box cables from the RF1 out to another tv in the house then perfect! The picture will be even worse (grainy/fussy).
Try and compare what what they were like before the engineer leaves and see if he can come up with anything. Don't whatever you do let him fob you off with "oh it's maybe your reception" etc that won't wash, lots of people are getting this problem.

Just try your best to think what was before and what it is now, let us know how you get on!
Can't believe everyone is complaining of the picture etc and no one has physically called sky to complain :( lol
#23
Sounds like i may be best keeping my original HD from 3 years back as i have no complaints [and it seems to be a rare 1 that hasn't gone kaputt!!].

Guess i can tell the engineer to not bother installing and just leave me the new box as a backup, just in case?
#24
Someone told me just to switch between SD (SCART) and HD (HDMI) Obviously a ploy to get people to upgrade to HD.
banned#25
Just had mine installed this morning. I have to agree with those people who say Standard TV is worse than before through HDMI(especially Sky Sports News). m

So what I have done is put my Scart lead back in and I watch Standard Def through my Scart channel and watch HD though my HDMI.

If anyone does this then remember to change the settings so Scart control is on and set to RGB.

You are then better off watching Standard Def on your Scart AV and when watching HD switch to HDMI. A mess on but worth it.

I have mine setup HDMI to HDTV to watch HD content and also have a 21"" CRT flatscreen TV for standard def with the scart going to the 21""

Standard def from my HD box to HDTV is fine but I prefer to watch SD content on an SDTV

I can also watch HD content on my CRT as the picture is better and before anyone says no it's not as your watching at 480i (I know) however Sky SD is broadcast at lower Kbps (The Hd channels are broadcast @ higher Kbps so it's less blocky close up than SD sky on an SDTV)

Not true. Your equipment must be rubbish. There is no problem with sound level.
#31
people with poor picture , have you actually checked your signal Quality , to see how well your dish has been pointed ? mine is maxed out

also have you checked your HD resolution output as engineers tend to leave them set to automatic , i know your only really talking about SD , but my TV is 1080P so i have it set to 1080i ,and there is a noticeable difference between the the two
#32
signal strenght is fine, mines on 1080i picture not that great but bearable, still waiting to hear back from saxo_appeal as to what was done to resolve "the known issues" with the box, but not heard yet, i,m sure wed all like to know what the issue was and how it was resolved

I also had SKY newly installed now. I have never had sky before.

1) SD was awful. same story as others. The engineer didn't d any update. I will try it in the evening and report back.

I did not have a SCART-2-SCART cable, but had an AV-2-SCART cable, connected it and saw 'some' improvement in picture quality, but not great - worse than my TV's inbuilt freeview tuner.

2) The volume & remote buttons on the Sky remote don't work. Is this common? or I am the only one who got the faulty box/remote.

3) The box is very slow to change channels or navigate EPG at the start-up everytime. After 10-15 minutes however everything gathers pace.

4) Remote Record is NOT working for me either from the browser or the iphone app. I can record programs using my remote though.

5) Sky Anytime shows only one program for me - "two and a half men" and nothing else and only one episode. If this is catch-up TV why didn't it download other stuff. I had the box ON for more than 8 hours yesterday.

cant understand how some ok and some not - surely all boxes must be same. tried an update?

Engineer downloaded update whilst he was here, mine is set at 1080i.

I have a Panasonic TH42PX80 plasma which only goes to 720p anyway so thats not affecting me. I tried changing the setting to automatic but its very annoying when you change channel and it changes the resolution and I cant tell the difference anyway when its set to automatic.

I tried 720p but picture is quite juddery so I have to set it to 1080i. Not sure if I got the latest box as I'm unsure what the latest model is - I received the Amstrad DRX890.

Mine is the same set up mate :)

When I called Sky all they said was Tech were looking into it, they never gave me any resolution - nothing !
My signal strength and my mum and dads were max
We both had the settings to 1080i
Wiring has been fine, Sd picture was poor as soon as we changed over, reverted back and the picture was superb! It's def def def the box that is playing up

when u say u reverted back, do u mean ur using ur sky + box again now? if so what r you going to do about your hd box, are you going to ask for a replacement or are you just using sky + box for SD channels then using your HD box for HD channels?

Quote from AV forums:
"a bit late i know but i have only recently gotten hd,and as you said on the ols epg hd was fantastic and sd was better than my old sky + very happy bunny.monday i got the new epg hd isn`t as good as it was and the sd is awful,i have the amstrad.does anyone know if i can revert to the old epg or will sky release some sort of fix ?????? "

Maybe it is the new Epg, maybe Sky will send out a fix for this

I'm making do for what I have mate, I have just kept the Sky HD box linked up to our tv :) I'm going to wait to see what happens with Sky Tech forst amd see what they end up doing!

On the other hand my mum and dad have "reverted" back from using the HD box and now just use the Sky+ box. The picture they get from the old Sky+ box is brilliant through in the back room

change it to HD box and picture in the back room is so awfull, washed out, grainy.....it's like someone needs to fine tune the tele in, believe me - we tried hundreds of ways of tuning lol
