i heard about all the 6 big Internet Service Providers signing a contract to cut down on illegal downloading, and wanted to know if anyone has received a warning letter from their ISP.

.yes.
#2
no but im waiting
#3
nope.
#4
No, but I'm sure as heck they will be sending one shortly.
#5
interestingly, how would they really "know"?

If you encrypt all your torrents, surely you could as easily just be watching a lot of 4od or summat instead of ripping off those poor multinational film, music and game companies?
#6
its will be difficult not to get caught if you use torrent as you will be uploading files as well.

No threatening letter as such..but a 'nice' letter to say they were / are putting restrictions on my bandwidth from 10am-3pm and 4pm till 9pm.

I use Rapidshare these days to download stuff.
#18

Just briefly http://www.stunnel.org/

It basically encrypts the data at one end then the software decrypts it when it arrives. Service providers can see the amount of traffic but cannot read what it is. Sure they can probably decrypt but this would be time consuming and there are easier targets out there. Always use newsgroups now as there is no uploading required.
#20
has every1 seen the film industrys lame advert to deter ppl from downloading movies:
"you wouldnt steal a car, you wouldnt steal a handbag...and so on"
lol ridiculous like any1 gona pay attention 2 that.
#21
Until they clamp down on the car boots chinese ( no offence but there is a lot that go round pubs)etc, they will never beat it anyway. Just lets pick the easy targets that have very l;ittle impact anyway on the scale of things.

lol, i phoned the number FACT who deal with fake dvds becuz i bought one and it would'nt work n the guy at the shop would'nt allow me to chnge it, anyway they never did anything bout never even piked the phone up.lol juts shows how much they care
#24
Been with NTL(Cable 2MB),Ukonline(ADSL 3.5MB),Sky(ADSL2+ 3.2MB) and back to Virgin(Cable 20MB). Never had any letters or anything. I have had surprisinglrey good service with them all.I am in a well services area with LLU and cable and lots of providers. Would just move to another provider if they started to bug me, eventually they would stop as there business began to suffer and more people went to the competition.

Ebay are still the best. They say they are clamping down on piracy but try one of the sponsered links and it will take you to a store selling The Simpsons Season 1-18 DVD collection. Well above board.

This is a great thread. I'm thinking of doing some shoplifting and maybe scamming some insurance companies. Does anyone have any advice (OK, I know its illegal, but its not like I'll really be hurting anyone...)?

What, by giving them employment so that they can afford to buy food and live in a home? Yeah, the wages are low, but the employees of these factories have a choice, and they choose to work there because the pay the companies give is far better than the alternative, which is dying on the streets.

Below is one of the emails that we get as an ISP
We disable all customers that break copyright infringement.
We cant look at what your doing or what your sharing. But if one of these letters or emails get sent to us then we check the IP against the time and cut them off.

Best way to not get into any bother is to use newsgroups.
Stay well away from Torrents...and no i dont want to get into the whole private trackers arguement :)

I'm confused. How does your theft of products compensate these people for the exploitation?
#34
We went through everything on the last thread about this. They catch you by connecting to your computer then taking note of your IP address. They don't need to see your packets when they are connected straight to you via bit torrent, kazaa etc.

Geez another one of those people.

I'm sorry, but if they can moniter us for downloading films and music and have the balls to warn us off, surely they can do this to pedos and moniter what they are downloading and cut off their internet.Instead, because there is money in films and some fat cats are losing out, they are going to do something about it, it's stupid and they should deal with the real problems surrounding the internet, rant over!
#37
Most people get caught because they upload alot. They are only sending warning letters, the ISP'S won't cut anyone off, too much business that they could potentially lose. I haven't received one yet, but I suppose I will in the future. I usually only use torrents for the odd program, or to download tv episodes. Limit your upload speed on torrents, and cancel them once their finished, your still uploading but less chance of being targeted. Nothings going to happen for a while yet, until the government actually forces ISP's to cut off people, but I can't see that happening either.
EDIT: Heres examples of the letters from virgin media http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/jul/03/letters.filesharers
They seem pretty tame to be honest. Plus it seems to be concerned with downloading music, which I rarely do anyway.

Sorry, I didn't realise honesty and rationality were so unpopular these days

Do you find it hard to breathe in your moral vacuum?
