Thx to whoever stole my ebay account today :(

Hi all,

Just a quick warning.
Someone stole my ebay id, and listed 37 items today :(
Luckily, they started around 3:30pm UK time, and i was home by 4:10.
Logged in, spotted all the new emails, changed my password, contacted ebay and all seems to be sorted now.

I hope the two folks who "bought" from me, understand and i am sorry and hope they get their money back, unless if they are part of the scam, well i hope they don't do this to someone else.

I was asked by ebay (on livechat) did i ever respond to spoofs, i said, lol, no i forward them back to you at, [email protected] ; ironic eh?

Oh well....

Sorry to hear that.
Did Livehelp sort it all out for you? Have they locked your account for 48 hours?

I think somethings going on with ebay today, IE7 will not let me log into any of my ebay accounts. I keep getting security certificate warnings.
I'm well in the poop without being able to access ebay.

Hiya,

Yeah, livehelp did, they shutdown my account, cleared all the items, i think they've refunded the listing fees etc.

Rumour has it, the ebay database has been hacked into, hence it being so odd today......as for IE7, not sure, i'm a firefox man of late

my account is fine

steffcip
my account is fine
Mine was when i last checked around 6:30am....then at 3pm or so, all hell let loose.
I was talking to a friend about 2 weeks ago, he said it had happened to him.

Surprised they never made you pay the amount in full, source the items yourself and post them to the buyers while paying an extra fee on top of the listing/final value and paypal cut for contacting them about it

ps I'm not bitter at all lol

Sorry to hear that Boyden, it happens quite a lot unfortunately.

well hang on a minute, your ebay account is no different from any other account on the internet, you need a username and a password, how did someone steal your account when you should have had a good password kept secret by yourself? eh?
I've no idea. I really haven't. The pc i use is at home, and no one else has access. No one else knows my ebay password. I genuinely have no idea.

Wow, what an informative and useful reply

Thanks for that.
To be honest, i normally trash my pc's c drive every so often anyways, with all my personal files on a separate hard disk, so there will be some pain attached to losing windows and my program files, but might be the only alternative.

I've got AVG, adaware and spybot already, guess these won't pick it up?

Really grateful for the reply, thx :-D

Edit:

Just ran this and all was fine, in that nowt was found, will keep checking

Lol, thanks again for the reply :-D

Ok, i already use Firefox so IE is on here, but untouched
The firewall i use is the XP SP2 one, and it's been great thus far.
I do allow some access through this, cos i use the pc for internet streaming of football but i know it's not them for sure
Ebay. As soon as i saw what had happened, i straight away changed my password, even before i contacted ebay, to make sure if the so and so was still online, they'd have to do a bit more work.
Ebay cancelled all listings and refunded me. Police, i'd not waste their time

As for being PC savvy lol, i guess my IT degree says, on paper at least i am :giggle: although i am not that well up on how someone has got to me.

I've ran avg, adaware and spybot and they returned nowt, currently running a ewido scan and see how that comes along.

As for rep, consider it done

But has it been great thus far? If i were you, i would opt to use a dedicated firewall as, time after time, pc pros comment on how poor the windows firewall is as a stand alone firewall, but remember if you do go for zonealarm or another firewall, you'll need to disable the windows firewall as they can conflict when both are in force
Very true, and yeah, sound advice to turn off the XP one, makes sense.
Arzon
It's beyond me that someone can think they can just come along and start selling on someone elses ebay account as if they'll not notice it? it just beggars belief
I know what you mean, and for someone as vigilant as i to be attacked, the shame, oh the same :giggle: My friend reckons that he heard the ebay database has been attacked; i'm not sure.
Arzon

Well i stand corrected if you've got an IT degree! very commendable!
Not really, just a bit of paper, but does help with stuff like this; i'm not afraid to delete stuff; i've yet to find a self destruct button, even format c: doesn't work anymore with Windows

Arzon
Thanks for rep, i wouldn't normally ask for it, but for some reason no one ever leaves me rep :-(
No problem at all, honest guv i was gonna leave some, cos i love it when folks help out with the none bargain stuff, more of a community feel, as for no one else doing so, oh, you 'orrible lot, please can we all rep Arzon? Oh go on.....

Arzon
It's a toughy to figure out quite how it's happened given what you say, i would just continue to be vigilant and hope for the best! :-D
Well i've just ran ewido in safe mode and it found one thing it really didn't like, backdoor.virkel.A in my synacast folder; it's part of the streaming package; it's been quaranteened so we'll see.

It's been a good exercise this, and hopefully other's will learn from my mistake (if i've made one ) and you're helpful and patient knowledge :)

Well in this case i know exactly how it's happened, you have a remote keylogger installed on your pc, This is a pc user's worst nightmare, you need to get rid of it NOW, it's the most likely case that you have one of these given what you've said

Whoa there cowboy, that's a 'huge' leap from such little information. I mean 'huge'.

It's not easy to somehow get a 'remote' keylogger on your computer, it would have to be accidentally installed and would have to not trip any virus checkers, net/upload limiters, spyware checkers and task manager watchers. A non remote keylogger is 'much' easier to get on your computer but of course requires direct physical access to the computer and if you have someone doing that to you then you have worse problems than someone using your Ebay account.

What's 'much' more likely is that the OP has fallen for a good phish e-mail or something similar, or even that they've hacked the password somehow. People have their Ebay accounts stolen all the time and the vast majority of cases are due to phishing.
#13
Irresponsible is what I'd call it. If someone actually 'does' have a remote keylogger on their computer they'd need to phone the police 'immediately'. Your whole life can be on the computer, internet banking means they can empty your bank accounts and max out your credit cards, they can steal your entire identity.

It's not generally something that someone does to sell a few poxy items on ebay.

Artemis,

I do not appreciate your comments at all.
I have not, did not and would not fall for a phishing email.
I open them all and forward them all to "][email protected], i do not enter any details into it. Please do not judge my intelligence or internet usage on this one thank you very much.

My bank account, paypal account and all other email and online services, forum et. al have not been compromised.

I am grateful for the time Arzon spent on this, and i did not, nor would invite your input on this, thanks.

So, i am irresponsible then am i? Guess i'd be the 1st and only person to ever have suffered this way, caught a virus, or a keylogger and must also be the 1st to have had my ebay account violated.

I have ran scans, anti-virus, spyware and spy-bots over night, and have been doing since the original post; but also, for the entire 8 years i have been online since the days i was one of the 1st to get NTL free dial-up, so do not pre-judge my net usage either. Not a thing has been proven that i had a keylogger, the item i mentioned, backdoor.virkel.A is part of the net streaming channels i use, and is not a keylogger, nor virus, just classed as spyware on my machine.

I hope for your sake, you are not the victim of something like this.

For the record, i think i was just unlucky and have had my password obtained from ebay, somehow, but not by my knowledge, incompetence, or irresponsibility.

For the record too, when i lived in a rented place, once i moved out, i was a victim of identity fraud. The next tenant used junk mail to obtain credit in my name, and i know what that can feel like, and how much of a negative effect it can have.

Please just butt out eh?
Thanks

Well, yes you did. If you didn't want random people commenting on your problems then I would suggest not posting them on a public forum.

And just to get this straight. Somebody tells you that you're so stupid that you've installed a remote keylogger on your computer, that your computer set up is so pathetic and insecure that you haven't noticed a remote keylogger sending your details to somebody else, that 'that' person is so stupid that all they have used your details for from such an illegal thing is to list a bunch of crap on Ebay and your response is to thank them. But if I mention that you might just be like the majority of other people and either filled in the wrong form or got hacked and your response is to abuse me?

Well done.

It wasn't an invitation to discuss my pc security, was a) a warning to other folk to be careful and b) to find out if it had happened to anyone else.

Artemis
Somebody tells you that you're so stupid that you've installed a remote keylogger on your computer,
Who is this someone you speak of? You, Arzon? Please elaborate for me.

Artemis
that your computer set up is so pathetic and insecure that you haven't noticed a remote keylogger
Which part of, i don't have a keylogger doesn't make sense to you? Which part of that do you not understand please? If you need help with that, i will say it once more. I do not have a keylogger on my pc. It is not pathetic and insecure, it has plenty of anti-virus and anti-spyware but as i have suggested and will say once more, clearly and slowly for you, it happens all the time. New viruses come out and before a fix can be had, they get through no matter how secure your pc/set-up is, otherwise, folks who write anti-virus would have wrote one definitive piece of code and stop research.

Artemis
But if I mention that you might just be like the majority of other people and either filled in the wrong form or got hacked and your response is to abuse me?
You mentioned it and i said it before you mentioned it, i did not and never have replied to a phishing email, hence the "abuse" if you call it that.

You don't seem to be able to follow a simple thread?

Arzon told you you had a keylogger and you thanked him for his contribution. I said you very likely didn't as you'd have to be an idiot to have installed it and have a **** set up to have not noticed it and whoever sent it to you would have to be just as big an idiot as whoever installed it to only use it to list ebay items and you decided to abuse me.

Frankly your inability to follow such a simple conversation doesn't inspire much confidence in your claims to have never been phished. But either way I don't really care any more.

Thanks for your upbeat comments Arzon. As far as i am concerned, my ebay account is fine for now, since i did sell two items last week, have been paid for them, and they have been dispatched.

It's case closed now.

I have heeded Arzon's advice, and have now got a copy of ZoneAlarm's Security Suite and that is working like a treat; might need to tune it more, it's very aggressive with certain products, example lol it seems to think even an amazon confirm email is a spoof/phisher.

Artemis, tbh, you've had your say, you've said how you feel and you can carry on this flame war if you like, or pour water on it, up to you; me, i'm done now.

Below didn't :x

Sorted!...but now i've got a problem with my ebay account! i bought something from a guy in Texas over 6 weeks ago.....a Sombrero! Yeah!

But it's not been delivered, and as of yesterday he's no longer registered on ebay, so i've opened a dispute with paypal to try and get my money back >> $55

Paypal will deduct a $25 fee from it if they manage to get the money for me....so whatever happens i've lost $25 here :x

Not Happy.....f**king texans :pirate:

Since when did Paypal start charging folks for charging money back to buyers of incomplete transactions? This i haven't heard of before.....where's Dinosteveus, he's been the ebay daddy of late?

Must admit, i'm surprised at paypal's stance on this. Were you not covered by the buyer-protection programme? And doesn't this mean, (or i was led to believe, never fully reading the T&C's ) that you got *all* your money back. They should refund you the 55 and charge the seller 25 :-(
