To Dell or not to Dell....Help with a choosing a Dell laptop please

Hi Guys

I am in the market for a laptop, ideally a screen around 13 inch or less. Have narrowed it down to the Dell Vostro 1310, but cannot choose between two options and was hoping someone may be able to point me in the right direction.

Option 1 is a Dell Vostro 1310, with Intel® Celeron® Processor 550 (2.0 GHz, 1 MB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB), 1 gig of ram and 160 hd at £310

Option 2 is a Dell Vostro 1310, with Intel® Core2 Duo Processor T5670 (1.8 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB), 2 gig of ram and 250 hd at £385

The main question I cannot answer is, for web browsing, storing 4-5000 songs and approx 1000 pictures do I need to spend the extra £75 or should I keep it in my back pocket for a rainy day. I appreciate the extra benefits of option 2 are good value, but do I need to bother spending the money. I also know that the hd on option 1 will be plenty big enought for my use. I currently have an external HD for storing the songs and music. Will be running vista so will the 1 gig of ram be ok.

I know nobody has a magic wand, but various deals on these laptops end tomorrow. Am I better off waiting for the new 'deals' or grab what I can now?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Get option 2. No.1 has a celeron processor which isnt very good. Plus the bigger hdd and extra gig of ram will be better in the long run.

Thanks for the steer but would the processor do the job and the ram be sufficient?

The Celeron 550 is a fine processor, sure it is Core2Duo but I've been using one in my Vostro 1700 and it's been great for gaming, so web browsing will be no problem

1 gig isn't enough for vista, vista can sit using that much whilst doing nothing.. :whistling:

Once you factor in the cost of more ram (£13 per gig, and you may need to buy two depending on the configuration thats currenty in the laptop) you aren't looking at much of a saving over the first system. And to be honest for the £50 the second system is far far far better than the first, and you should get a few more years use out of it..

Well yes, but a 630Mhz celeron M like the one in the eee PC is fine for web browsing (and uses 1/5 of the power).

The celeron 550 is a single-core processor.

If you want to run vista then I'd go for the dual-core processor and 2GB of ram.

Vista in general shouldn't be used on a laptop full stop. It uses up too much resources meaning more power usage and more heat. But it will run fine on a Celeron 550 and 1 GB of RAM, I should know, my Vostro 1700 came with that. XP would be a better choice for the OS, don't know if it's possible to phone up and get it put on instead now.

Option 2 is a lot better.

Although i would advice you to wait a month, as dell should bring the new centrino 2 processors out this month. and centrino 2 has been out since july and dell usually upgrade in september as they have made their money on the students :)

plus, then you can probably go for the lowest model which will be better then these two and cost less, and u might get a new model :)

Deals always get better with dell, not worse, if they bring the new processors out, these laptops will go for like £200 each in outlet easily.
If you need it now, try outlet anyway, they are as good as new from people who returned them as they didnt like the laptop/desktop's. and can be like half the price
