Hi

I was reading on the reviews for the tomtom start that when choosing your route you cant specify to avoid m/ways or toll routes is this true ?
and can you alter this by upgrading it ?
vibeone if you are out there do you know when you up[grade as you have mentioned this will alter so you can have the above or anyone else who knows?

many thanks

correction sorry you cant ask to avoid motorways but it does ask if you want to avoid tolls

tomtom start is a bit weird - I hadn't realised until I was working on one the other day. Once you upgrade to "normal" tomtom menus, you lose all sound. Not sure why.

However, if you install a SE version from say ipmart, and then set it to x40 emulation, you can set up all your options - including "ask me everytime" for route type. Then when your done, set the setconfig.txt file to modelid:39 and it'll switch back to tomtom start mode, with sounds, and with all your options set up - including PGPSW cameras, colour schemes, even TTS voices.

So in answer to your question: you are correct in saying that option is not available by default.

Also bare in mind that obviously hardware wise, its fixed, so if you need euro maps, dont buy a UK version with small onboard memory and no card slot - the bigger maps just wont fit.

ive got one and yes you can it also asks when it plans a route and its via a toll would you like to avoid not sure if this after update as i updated mine straight away hope this helps any thing else you wanna know

thats interesting - the device I was messing with just yesterday definitely DIDN'T ask for route type (until I hacked it)

It shouldn't be there by default on the TT Start. TT always mess around with updates however so it is possible that this isn't true for all Starts.

many THANKS to you all- Im not sure if I can do all of this adjusting by myself - but I will read ipmart and see , but does anyone know the most basest model of tom tom that does give you the option to choose to avoid toll roads etc .
vibeone - Im ok for EU doubt I'd need it for that in the near future-

[I]that's my thoughts as well.

I'm trying to find the specific setting to try and turn it on without requiring SE navcores. Its definitely not in mapsettings.cfg ... or any of the other obvious places?

The only way you can do it requires you to do illegal things - depends on whether you are happy with that and it shouldn't be discussed on here. TT are desperate to try to create differences between what are essentially very similar products, hence why they take out such a simple part of the programme.

As far as I am aware, ALL other units do it.

The way I see it.... is that it is indeed illegal (or at least against EULAs etc), and really maps shouldn't be copied etc. (Not that it stops me!) I think software hacks are fair game to be honest though.

As you state - hardware is normally very similar, and locking down via software is always heading for epic fail.

I thought you could do this on all tomtoms

You can, and probably will with the Start eventually, but not enough hacker peeps have them yet to work out the problems - lack of sound being a weird one.

I know a bit about tomtoms, and the software, but really I'm just a henchman for the proper clever guys who work all this stuff out.

Obviously can't link (even though the site itself has no content), but search google for "ipmart tomtom" - its a different world!
