tomtom in london

Hi,
I have just bought a tomtom one V2. I just took it for a trip to london, this was the main reason i bought it, because of the all the confusing roads in london. Anyway while we were in london, the tomtom all of sudden said we were in the wrong direction and started to reroute, even though we were following the direction exactly.

Also it seemed to take weird long routes telling us to go across one side of the bridge and then come back on the other side of the bridge, when we could have just turned left.

Anyway else had this sort of trouble, is it the tomtom or just my one?

thanks
rockinter

Sounds to me like you missed a turning without noticing and it rerouted you slightly oddly.
#2
could have been signal issues

give it time and you will grow to love it

The rerouting thing, it told us to go straight. We went straight; then all of a sudden it told us to take a left, go round block and come back to the same road. We could have just carried on straight.

Have you applied all the latest updates etc?

I got map version V.6.56, is this old? I only bought it 3 weeks ago from ebuyer.

possibly - and only possibly a outdated map - perhaps things used to be 1 way???

but my money is on signal issues and the tom tom thought you were further up the road than you actualy was

They took them out of the Ambulances in my area as it kept sending them up one way streets the wrong way and down dead ends..lol.

One thing i don't understand how can the roads be wrong. I mean the roads haven't changed in many years. And i have seen the teleatlas (people who supply the maps to tomtom) vans travelling around with cameras on them. Or do the people driving the vans drive it the wrong way so the information is recorded wrong?

Are the garmin or navman any better?

One way systems do change and the map data that the GPSr uses can be a few years old.

Also the signals are bouncing around off the high buildings and this can give false readings or you may even loose the signal altogether. TomTom tries to compensate for this by 'guessing' where it thinks you should be on the road depending on your speed and direction of travel.

Garmin every time. Their Customer Service is second to none.

the 6.56 is the firmware version, not the map
to see the map, press on the sat signal bars in the bottom right, then press on the version 6.56 also in the bottom right and it will show loads of information.
Your looking for the map name and it will give a number after it, that is the map version.
what does it say?

In a place like London with all the high rise buildings, you will generally lose the signal quite often and as Store mentioned, it will guess where you are rather than be accurate.

The maps used by GPS manufacturers are generally toss, one of them should shell out on using Ordinance Survey and get it bang on.

Out of all the GPS units I've seen, I'd say Garmin has the least problems on the software side of things.

thanks
the map is v660.1219

Its not the most upto date, but there aren't many changes in the latest release

my tomtom gives me a laugh (well, maybe not), when it takes me down my road on to a onway street turinging left, then tells me to turn left (no right turns allowed) go up the road take a turn right, go around and back onto same street, back past the turning i came from. Then take me left, then tell me to go right and around aroad leading back onto same street I could have just turned right onto in the 1st place...

all that when, when I started I could have made 3 turnings in not even 2 mins to get to the same place.lol

We left Legoland in Windsor looking for a pizza hut for our tea, looked for restaurants under Sat Nav and it took us to the nearest Pizza Hut. We were just heading towards Windsor Castle and couldn't believe it when the Sat Nav directed us to the entrance gates and promptly said 'you have reached your destination' !!! WHAT!

It wasn't funny at the time as we were starving hungry, but whenever we see Windsor Castle on TV the kids always refer to it as Pizza Hut! :giggle:
