What are everybody's Top 5 downloads for a new pc? eg the first 2 i could think of was picasa for my photos and handbrake for converting video for my ipod touch. i have a quadcore q6600 2gb ram and 320gb hdd with vista premium and i am NOT into gaming on my pc so more helpful download ideas would be great and also if everyone states what they are used for and why. hopefully we can get some ideas flowing to each other!!
many thanks

It'd be great if you could add any free downloads (legal ones obviously!) to the Download Thread in my signature link- Have a look there too, there are loads of downloads that our members have been compiling, so you might find something useful :)

When I got my replacement laptop a couple of months ago (previous one was covered in small child sick - yummy !!) the first things I re-downloaded/installed were:

NOD 32
superantispyware
spyware doctor
nero 8
DVD shrink
DVD Santa

Then it was just things as I remembered them, but they are the initial 6 that I know I will need almost straight away

Nero doesn't copy the disc. It burns things to discs, but DVD Shrink is the first one to use to take the dvd files off the dvd disc, then you use Nero to put these files onto a blank dvd disc. Comes in incredibly handy when you have to back up all of your childrens dvd's because they like to use them as frisbees. It doesn't work out nearly as costly when you let them have the back ups to watch/chew instead and you keep the originals safe. :p

Nero does cost, but there are ways of getting it for free on the internet, as long as you look in the right places :whistling:. Or I think you can get a trial version for 30 days from the official website and then buy it online after. Don't know if they still do that though

I beg to differ, nero is great for disc copying if its like for like "duplication"

Oh, does that work now then with original dvd's, rather than copied dvd's? It's just when I've tried backing up dvd's in the past, it's always come up as it's protected or something and cant or wont copy it, which is why I've always gone through dvd shrink first.

Mind you, I think that was Nero 6 I last tried that with. Just my luck if you can do that now as I've probably wasted ages using dvd shirink first :-D

It always has done, the secret is using anydvd from slysoft running in the background:thumbsup: It wont copy a dual layer dvd to a single layer one, for that I use (I mean ive been told) clonedvd2 also from slysoft, thats pretty simple too, you place your original (that you legally own and are simply backing up) in your dvd rom, the blank dvd in your writer click through a couple of menus (like do you want to transfer all the subtitle choices, language choices, trailers menus etc) then press go, with a full feature lenghth dvd it transfers to your pc compresses it all and then burns it in one fell swoop, takes my pc around 30 minutes start to finish, again have anydvd running for removing protections. With anydvd and clonedvd I always keep a copy of the software in my web email account so ive always got access wherever i am to a backup!

Oooooh, thanking you muchly !! Dvd shrink alone takes about 40 minutes, so I'll give this a go next time I need to re-do Ice Age - that's the fave at the mo, although after the first 7 times I didn't like it as much :p

K Lite - Play all those video files
VLC Media Player - Again for the video files, much faster than Windows Media Player
Firefox - Find those video files
Winrar - Unpack all those video files
Utorrent - acquire all those video files

Not necessarily in that order though

I only use Real Player to listen to BBC Radio Programs (you need it to listen to some BBC radio stations).

If it was not for that I would not bother.
